The first trailer for Olmo Schnabel’s highly-anticipated directorial debut, “Pet Shop Days,” is out, living up to the bold promises made during its initial festival screenings in 2024.
Independent distributor Utopia obtained the film back in March, following its triumphant debut at the Venice Film Festival and SXSW held in Texas. Headed by Jack Irv and Dario Yazbek Bernal, “Pet Shop Days” features stars such as Willem Dafoe, Peter Sarsgaard, and Emmanuelle Seigner. This production also benefits from a strong team of executive producers including Martin Scorsese, Jeremy O. Harris, and Michel Franco (of “New Order”).
In Netflix’s “House of Flowers,” Bernal portrays Alejandro, a Mexican gangster’s son attempting to escape his past in New York City. Here, he encounters Jack (Irv), a young adult residing with affluent parents Francis (Dafoe) and Diana (Seigner), while working at the main pet store. In a cloud of drugs and intimacy, Alejandro charms Jack and pulls him into the city’s criminal world.
In the trailer presented, Irv and Bernal are portrayed as a problematic duo. It offers brief glimpses of its impressive cast and hints at an intensifying gloominess. In EbMaster‘s film festival review, director Schnabel was commended for standing out with his debut, which felt tangible, authentic, and unsettling as he aimed to convey the feelings (though not always the logic) of people in their twenties.
The trailer showcases Irv and Bernal as a mischievous pair, providing glimpses of its talented cast and building suspense with growing shadows. In EbMaster‘s review of the film at the festival, Schnabel was lauded for his remarkable debut that seemed genuine, relatable, and disquieting in its portrayal of the sensibilities (rather than always the common sense) of young adults.
