The upcoming game by FromSoftware is titled “Elden Ring: Reign of Shadows” and, similar to previous titles, some players have already had a sneak peek through its closed network testing. “Elden Ring: Reign of Shadows” can be considered a more innovative spin-off that reuses the gameplay mechanics and assets from “Elden Ring” in the context of a multiplayer-oriented survival roguelike, significantly altering the overall experience despite the use of recycled content. Many weapons, spells, and enemies from “Elden Ring” are being repositioned, as well as iconic enemies from the “Dark Souls” trilogy, with the full scope of these changes yet to be unveiled.
In the expansive player base of Elden Ring, not everyone might find appeal in Elden Ring: Nightreign due to its quicker, more arcade-style gameplay. However, this distinct playstyle should foster a dedicated fanbase. These fans will appreciate the game’s replayability, but FromSoftware has planned ahead for when that becomes less engaging. By Q4 2025, Elden Ring: Nightreign is expected to introduce eight playable Nightfarers and numerous bosses, along with paid DLC offering more of each. While this is exciting news, it carries certain expectations that could potentially impact both the game and its DLC significantly.
The History of FromSoftware DLC Sets A High Bar For Nightreign
Elden Ring Nightreign‘s DLC Has To Excel Despite Its Scope
The DLC produced by FromSoftware has earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence, and it’s clear why this is so. Beginning with the expansion, “Artorias of the Abyss” for the original “Dark Souls”, each additional content pack provided not just extended playtime, but significant encounters and boss battles that swiftly became synonymous with their main game’s prestige. While “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” and “Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon” have only received minor updates, they were more than compensated by the “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree”, an expansion for “Elden Ring” that is essentially a Souls game in its own right.
The next game, “Elden Ring: Nightreign,” is approaching, but it’s wise to curb anticipation for its DLC ahead of time. Unlike the base game priced at $40 USD, the DLC included in the Deluxe Edition appears to cost half as much and is slated for release within a year, suggesting a smaller scale compared to “Shadow of the Erdtree.” The advertised content mainly includes more Nightfarers and bosses, which could range from new maps associated with additional Nightlord bosses, or something less expansive like an addition to “Binding of Isaac” where the new content is interwoven with the existing.
Elden Ring Nightreign And Its DLC Invite Elden Ring Comparisons
Even though Elden Ring Nightreign’s DLC has a limited focus, it doesn’t exempt it from meeting fan expectations, especially a year after Shadow of the Erdtree was launched. To surpass fan expectations, complex player characters and challenging boss fights should be the minimum standard for Nightreign’s expansion. Additionally, including character cosmetics to complement those missing in the base game would be a good beginning. Extra items, relics, and perhaps even passive bonuses would all be well-received. Ideally, the DLC should introduce entire new Nightlords with their corresponding maps. Furthermore, the potential questlines that could stem from Nightreign’s content are also something to look forward to.
How Elden Ring Nightreign’s Post-Launch Plans Can Succeed
To thrive, the paid expansion of Elden Ring Nightreign must emulate the quality and intricacy of the game’s Shadow of the Erdtree, which is quite a formidable challenge. The Shadow of the Erdtree stands as the pinnacle of FromSoftware’s boss design in the Souls series, and the Nightreign DLC will be expected to continue this tradition. While it’s unclear how much of the Shadow of the Erdtree will appear in Nightreign beyond one of its Golden Hippopotamus field bosses, the Nightreign DLC offers an ideal opportunity to incorporate more of its content, as well as welcome additional Dark Souls characters for maximum impact. The Elden Ring Nightreign and its expansion face steep challenges in surpassing their predecessors, but a successful outcome could be equally rewarding.
