2023 saw the cancellation of PlayStation’s live-service game lineup, including The Last of Us Online, which was unfortunately shelved due to Naughty Dog choosing to concentrate on single-player titles instead. However, this decision came despite initial positive feedback about the game from those who had a chance to play it.
Previously, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s former president, Shuhei Yoshida, expressed his initial fondness for a certain game following a trial play, as shared on the Sacred Symbols podcast (through Push Square). However, Naughty Dog recognized the effort required to bring it to life only after Bungie pointed out some overlooked aspects.
According to him, the concept for The Last of Us Online originated from Naughty Dog. However, Bungie outlined the requirements needed to create live-service games, which Naughty Dog understood meant they wouldn’t be able to develop Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet if they pursued it, demonstrating a lack of forward planning.
According to Yoshida’s account, it hasn’t been mandatory for any PlayStation development team to create a live-service game – instead, the teams propose games based on their interpretation of industry trends, which then serve as their starting point for development.
Based on his observations, when studios notice a major initiative from a company, they understand that jumping on board increases their chances of getting a project endorsed and backed. It’s not about Hermen Hulst instructing teams to create live-service games; rather, it seems to be a collaborative decision.
Recently, Sony has discontinued two live-service projects from Bluepoint and Bend Studio, including a rumored God of War game. When The Last of Us Online was terminated, Naughty Dog stated that maintaining the game needed excessive resources, leaving them unable to create any more single-player games.
The statement explained that to maintain and expand The Last of Us Online, our entire team would need to dedicate resources to post-launch content for an extended period, potentially hindering the creation of future single-player games. Therefore, we were faced with two choices: transform into a studio specializing in live service games or continue creating narrative-driven single-player games, which is what Naughty Dog is known for.
