Actors Alia Shawkat, Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, LaKeith Stanfield, Zack Fox, and Tony Hale have signed on to work alongside Kristen Stewart in the movie “The Wrong Girls” produced by Neon.
The movie, serving as Dylan Meyer’s initial directorial effort, recently started filming last week. This makes it one of the first independent films to commence production in Los Angeles post-January’s destructive wildfires. In the United States, Neon will handle its theatrical release, while they’ll also manage the international distribution rights.
For a span of 29 days, the production of this movie started just last week. Throughout this period, around 100 individuals will be working each day. Nearly all of these workers, about 95%, are local residents from L.A. Among them are renowned cinematographer Todd Banhazl, who was nominated for an Emmy in “Winning Time” and Hustlers, talented singer-songwriter and composer Ty Segall, as well as Heidi Bivens, a costumer also nominated for an Emmy on “Euphoria”.
In “Moxie,” directed by Meyer, the movie tells the story of Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Shawkat), who are best friends and rely on each other financially and in their shared love for smoking weed. An unfortunate case of mistaken identity disrupts their usual routine, causing turmoil in their lives.
The Philadelphia punk group, Mannequin Pussy, will unleash their electrifying performance in a movie by appearing live at a formerly active Los Angeles do-it-yourself venue that has been closed for some time.
The movie will be co-produced by Maggie McLean, Stewart, and Meyer from Nevermind Pictures; Alex McAtee, James Weaver, Rogen, and Evan Goldberg from Point Grey; and Allison Carter and Jon Read from Savage Rose Productions, under their production agreement with Neon. Neon’s supervision will be handled by Jason Wald (EVP Acquisitions & Production), Claire Timmons (VP Talent Relations), and Kate Gondwe (Manager ADP). The deal was brokered by WME Independent and UTA Independent Film Group.
“The movie titled ‘The Wrong Girls’ is the third project that Kristen Stewart and Neon have worked on together, following their collaborations in Pablo Larraín’s critically acclaimed film ‘Spencer’ from 2021 and David Cronenberg’s ‘Crimes of the Future’ in 2022. In ‘Spencer’, Stewart was recognized with an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Princess Diana.”
The agreement arrives following Neon’s recent premiere of “Anora,” a critically-adored movie directed by Sean Baker, featuring Mikey Madison. Amongst its latest productions are also “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” an Oscar-nominated masterpiece from Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, and “Longlegs,” a horror flick by Osgood Perkins that garnered the highest box office revenue among independent films this year with $75 million in domestic sales.
Currently, the film production company Nevermind Pictures, led by Stewart, Meyer, and McLean, is working through the editing phase for Stewart’s directorial first feature “The Chronology of Water”, which features Imogen Poots in the lead role.
