Pokemon Go Developer In Talks To Sell Games Division To Saudi Arabia’s Savvy For $3.5 Billion – Report

According to reports, the creators of Pokemon Go, Niantic, are said to be negotiating a potential sale of their gaming division to Scopely Inc, a game studio partly owned by Saudi Arabia, for approximately $3.5 billion. In 2023, Scopely was itself acquired by a Saudi Arabian company called Savvy Games for a whopping $4.9 billion.

According to Bloomberg’s report, it is possible that an announcement about the potential acquisition of Niantic’s games division could occur within a few weeks. However, it’s important to note that no agreement has been finalized yet, so there’s still a chance the deal might not go through. The reported purchase would encompass all of Niantic’s existing games, including the widely-played Pokemon Go. Both companies have chosen not to confirm or deny this report. Notably, Niantic recently collaborated with Savvy Games to extend Pokemon Go operations into Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Egypt (as mentioned by Pocketgamer.biz).

Following a series of challenges, Niantic has yet to achieve significant success beyond Pokemon Go with their game titles. In 2021, the Harry Potter mobile game was discontinued, and in 2023, after canceling a Marvel project and closing NBA All-World, the company had to let go of 230 employees.

Lately, Saudi Arabia has been putting a lot of money into gaming industry. Last year, it was mentioned that they planned to put $38 billion into video game businesses, and they have already invested substantial amounts in companies such as Nintendo. If the deal to acquire Niantic’s games division goes through, it would be one of their biggest investments aimed at expanding the economic investment portfolio of the country.

2024 saw Niantic disclose they utilized player data from Pokemon Go to develop a navigation AI for real-world scenarios. Later, the company emphasized that this information should not be exploited for military purposes. More recently, Niantic announced a collaboration with Major League Baseball and Pokemon Go, aiming to set up themed PokeStops in stadiums. Some baseball clubs will also organize Pokemon Go events during their season.
