30 years after their collaboration on the groundbreaking TV series “My So-Called Life,” Claire Danes, the star, and Winnie Holzman, the creator, are planning to team up once again, according to exclusive information we’ve obtained. HBO is working on a family drama titled “The Applebaum Curse,” which would be penned by Holzman and feature Danes in the lead role.
Based on the logline, “The Applebaum Curse” is being considered for a continuous one-hour drama series featuring Claire Danes in the main role. In this series, Danes will not only play the lead character but also function as an executive producer. On the other hand, Holzman will take up dual roles as both writer and executive producer, as well as overseeing the show as a showrunner.
On the crimson carpet of the recent Writers Guild Awards over the weekend, Holzman announced the news. She was recognized in the category of adapted screenplay (alongside Dana Fox), for the movie “Wicked.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve often pondered why no one has endeavored to recreate the groundbreaking series “My So-Called Life” in this era of remakes and reboots. Well, let me share an intriguing tidbit: I am currently working on a project that I’m hoping Claire Danes and I can bring to life together. It’s not a traditional reboot per se, but if we manage to pull it off, it will certainly echo the spirit of our previous collaboration.
Without a doubt, the announcement of Holzman and Danes recreating some magic similar to “My So-Called Life” will be big news for viewers who grew up in a certain era. This series only ran for one season on ABC, from 1994 to 1995, but it left a deep mark on the way teenage coming-of-age stories were portrayed on television screens.
The television series “My So-Called Life” played a significant role in boosting the career of Claire Danes, who received a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination for her performance on the show. This also applies to other young actors like Jared Leto and Wilson Cruz. Moreover, this series served as a precursor for popular teen-centric shows such as “Dawson’s Creek” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” These latter series seemed to have been influenced by the raw and authentic depiction of adolescence presented by Danes and her fellow cast members, as scripted by creator Winnie Holzman.
As a movie enthusiast, let me clarify that “The Applebaum Curse” is not a rehash of the beloved series “My So-Called Life”. Instead, it’s an entirely new tale, and I’m eagerly working on it. Fingers crossed, it might find its home at HBO, though nothing is set in stone yet. I truly hope that Claire will join me on this journey once more, as her involvement would undeniably add to the excitement! Here’s to hoping for the best!
After making a significant impact on television with “My So-Called Life,” Danielle, now a renowned actress, soared to new heights in her career. On the big screen, she captivated audiences with her performances in films like “Romeo + Juliet” and “Brokedown Palace.” Her talents were further acknowledged when she won an Emmy for her role in HBO’s “Temple Grandin,” and twice more for her stellar work on Showtime’s “Homeland.” As a movie reviewer, I can confidently say that Danielle’s journey from small screen success to Hollywood stardom is truly inspiring.
More recently, Danes has appeared in the FX miniseries “Fleishman Is In Trouble,” for which she received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Upcoming, she will star in the Netflix miniseries “The Beast in Me,” where she also serves as executive producer alongside Gabe Rotter, Howard Gordon, Jodie Foster, and Conan O’Brien.
Holzman has collaborated with Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, executive producers of “My So-Called Life,” on their TV series “Once and Again” from 1999 to 2002. Together with her daughter Savannah Dooley, she developed the ABC Family series “Huge.” Additionally, she served as an executive producer for Cameron Crowe’s Showtime series “Roadies.”
However, Holzman’s most significant achievement spanning over two decades is co-authoring the book for the Broadway musical “Wicked,” in collaboration with Stephen Schwartz on its music and lyrics. This production is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel, and it has garnered tremendous success. Notably, “Wicked” was recently transformed into a blockbuster movie, and an upcoming sequel titled “Wicked: For Good” is in the works.
Danes is represented by William Morris Endeavor (WME), Michael Aloni at Signpost Management, as well as Ziffren Brittenham. On the other hand, Holzman is managed by Creative Artists Agency (CAA).
