In just about two months, we’ll have the Nintendo Direct event, where they’ll mainly discuss the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This presentation should reveal several exclusive titles and third-party releases for the console. It’s already been confirmed that the Switch 2 will be compatible with games from the Nintendo Switch Online service and various Switch games when it launches.
Regarding games available on the Nintendo Switch, one method players used to acquire new titles was through the use of Nintendo Game Vouchers or by redeeming My Nintendo Gold Points. However, Nintendo has recently disclosed changes concerning these vouchers and points, specifically in relation to their compatibility with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.
Nintendo recently made changes to their webpages regarding the Nintendo Game Vouchers and My Nintendo Gold Points features in relation to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console. Previously, players with a Switch Online subscription could purchase Nintendo Game Vouchers from the eShop and use them towards purchasing Switch games. However, Nintendo has now confirmed that these vouchers will not be redeemable for games on the new Nintendo Switch 2.
Just a heads-up, Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games cannot be obtained using Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers. It’s important to note that while you can still use these vouchers for other Nintendo Switch games, especially those compatible with the Switch 2, the My Nintendo Gold Points feature will not apply to these exclusive titles.
As stated on the My Nintendo Gold Points webpage, effective from March 25th, 2025 at 9:30 pm PDT / 12 am ET / 5 am UTC, players will no longer be able to accumulate Gold Points by purchasing digital content such as games and other items. However, there are exceptions; players can still earn Gold Points if they pre-order before the stated date, even if payment is processed at a later time.
For physical game editions launched on or before the given date, players can still accumulate Gold Points even if they buy the games after 24th March 2025, as long as they do so within a year from the original release date, according to Nintendo’s explanation.
In summary, Nintendo has shared that players can accumulate Gold Points from purchases made at their New York store up until March 24th, 2025. It is important to note that these points remain valid for a full year following the month in which they were earned, allowing players to use them as usual even after the program’s discontinuation.
Starting from this date, I won’t be able to gain Gold Points when making purchases using Nintendo eShop cards directly. However, some retailers will still sell eShop cards that disclose earning Gold Points, but these cards won’t earn Gold Points when used for purchases. On the bright side, I can still accumulate Platinum Points after the discontinuation of Gold Points, which can be earned through various services or as a prize in specific promotions or tournaments. These Platinum Points can then be redeemed for some cool rewards!
