In just five days following its launch on Steam on February 13th, the indie strategy city builder roguelite game, Dawnfolk, has achieved a significant milestone by selling 10,000 copies. This morning, the developer, Darenn Keller, who previously worked at Ubisoft and decided to pursue his passion project, announced this achievement on social media. It’s always thrilling to witness an independent, solo-developer’s labor of love gain a supportive audience.
Indie roguelite city-builder, Dawnfolk, hits a major sales milestone
In Dawnfolk, you assume the role of a ruler in an enigmatic fantasy realm. According to its Steam page, this world has been rebuilding for years since “gigantic black monoliths fell from the sky.” In Dawnfolk, you encounter a helpful fiery entity named Lueur who can dispel the darkness radiating from these monoliths. It is now your responsibility to restore your realm and dissipate the darkness. The decisions you make will ultimately decide the destiny of all its inhabitants.
Delve into a grid of territories that form your domain and the nearby environments. Encounter perils and calamities and choose how to manage them. Will you aid the wandering tribes in the desert or rescue the miners following the mine collapse? Or will you leave them to their own devices while amassing enough resources to sustain yourself? Accumulating resources isn’t an automated process. Dawnfolk combines a relaxed, unhurried city-building experience with critical choices and strategic thinking.
Dawnfolk is intended to be user-friendly. Yesterday’s update included an option for players to engage with the game using only a mouse. Moreover, the game doesn’t require players to spend countless hours mastering its mechanics or constructing a vast civilization. As stated on the Steam page, “Not everyone has the time to dedicate hundreds of hours to understanding how to play a strategic game. You can jump right in and begin building your settlement immediately, growing from a few tents to a large city within less than an hour.
Despite having a relatively limited number of user reviews on Steam, namely 186 at the moment, Dawnfolk boasts an impressive 94% positive rating. Keller, in his description beneath the official launch trailer, describes it as, “If Minecraft and Civilization had a baby, this would be it.” It’s important to note that I’m not providing a review for Dawnfolk, nor have I been contacted by the developer or publisher. However, the game seems intriguing, and it appears that over ten thousand other people share my sentiment. Dawnfolk is currently available on PC via Steam and is said to be a great match for the Steam Deck. There’s also an ongoing introductory discount of 15%, reducing the $14.99 price to $12.74, but this offer will only last for the next 40 hours.
