In response to Guy Pearce’s comments about him in an interview, Kevin Spacey has released a video on X where he advises his “L.A. Confidential” co-star to mature. Pearce made headlines by stating that Spacey made targeted advances towards him during the filming of the 1997 Oscar-winning neo-noir crime drama. Pearce described Spacey as being aggressive, but also clarified that he was not a victim to the same extent as other individuals who have been preyed upon by sexual predators.
In his video message, Spacey expressed regret that Pearce chose to address their past issues publicly in the media. He stated that if he had upset Pearce in the past, he could have privately discussed it with him, but instead Pearce decided to speak to the press. Now, the media is questioning him about Pearce’s statements. Spacey’s response? Mature up.
Were you also open about mentioning to the media that a year after filming ‘L.A. Confidential’, you visited Savannah, Georgia while I was working on ‘Midnight in the Valley of Good and Evil’ specifically to see me? Did you share this detail with them as well, or is it not consistent with the story of being a victim that you’re presenting? I’m sorry if I didn’t realize you weren’t interested in spending time with me. Perhaps there was another explanation, I’m not sure.”
(This version aims to maintain the original’s intent and tone while using more common phrases and rephrasing some of the sentences for clarity.)
Spacey’s remarks were, “It seems that after all this time and my struggles, I find myself on a mission to prevent the villain. Is this really happening? Why the delay? Did your vehicle break down? We could talk anytime, anywhere. In fact, we could discuss it here live on X if you prefer, as I have nothing to hide. But, Guy, it’s past time for you to mature. You are not a victim.
Since the accusations of sexual misconduct in 2017, two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey has not worked in Hollywood. Subsequent legal cases were filed following these claims. In 2022, a New York jury determined that he did not molest actor Anthony Rapp, who had initially accused him of sexual assault in the early ’80s when Rapp was just 14 years old. The following year, a U.K. court acquitted Spacey of nine charges of sexual assault from four complainants. Many other charges and lawsuits have since been withdrawn. Throughout this time, Spacey has maintained his innocence in the face of all allegations.
For quite some time now, figures like Sharon Stone, Liam Neeson, Brian Cox and others have advocated for Spacey’s reinstatement in Hollywood. More recently, Brian Cox voiced his opinion to the U.K. publication The i Paper, stating that he never perceived Spacey as an abusive individual. He further expressed concern about the current trend of “cancelling” people who are accused of misconduct, remarking: “What do you mean ‘cancelled’? How can you cancel someone? It’s ridiculous to just dismiss someone like that.
Last year, Stone expressed her excitement to The Telegraph about seeing Kevin return to work. She finds him to be a brilliant individual, graceful, full of fun, excessively generous, and knowledgeable about our profession beyond what many of us could ever achieve.
