The controversial YouTube feature is making its move to a competing platform, but with a unique spin added to it.
In the year 2021, YouTube implemented significant updates on its dislike feature, concealing the number of visible ‘thumbs down’ votes for both videos and comments.
As a gamer, I found myself disagreeing with YouTube when they implemented changes aimed at fostering a “more inclusive and respectful community.” However, these updates seemed to backfire, as numerous users resorted to utilizing third-party applications to uncover the number of dislikes on their content instead.
As a dedicated user, I’m excited about the recent move by Instagram to introduce their own version of a “dislike” button. The aim is to foster a more amicable and welcoming environment within the platform’s comment section.
Instagram introduces YouTube-style dislikes, but with a catch
On Threads, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri shared an update: they’re experimenting with a new dislike option, and certain users are already using it.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed a cool new feature they’re trying out on Instagram – it’s a secret button next to comments! This allows folks to discreetly let the poster know if they aren’t feeling great about that specific comment.
Similarly to YouTube, Instagram chooses not to share the number of downvotes or dislikes on comments, keeping this information private.
In other words, according to Mosseri, this feature might evolve into a ranking system similar to Reddit, where comments with the highest number of dislikes would appear lower in a post.
Over time, we plan to incorporate this signal into our comment ranking system, aiming to push comments that are not well-received further down. Ideally, this could make Instagram comments more welcoming and positive.

It remains to be seen if Instagram might introduce additional features such as a “dislike” button for posts, potentially making it visible to others, much like how YouTube previously operated.
In a February update, YouTube too adjusted its comment section by introducing a “thread” function, but some users found this modification unpleasant due to its execution.
