In a recent disclosure, Game Director Aaron Keller of Overwatch 2 explains the rationale behind bringing back loot boxes during Season 15.
In Season 15 of Overwatch 2, there’s a significant content overhaul on the horizon, including the Hero Perks system which will transform how characters are played. However, what’s really generating buzz is the return of loot boxes during Season 15, offering an opportunity for every player to snag free cosmetic items.
In Overwatch, loot boxes are making a return with an emphasis on fairness for free players. Instead of buying the boxes directly, players will have opportunities to win them, either by playing the game extensively or participating in specific events like those hosted on Discord and Twitch. A few boxes may also be awarded through the paid battle pass.
In a recent chat, Keller explained the rationale behind the return of loot boxes, as well as their extravagant presentation.
Keller claims Overwatch was not rewarding enough
During an interview with PCGamesN, Keller expressed his concern that dedicated players, particularly those who play for free, aren’t adequately recognized or rewarded for their investment in the game. Loot boxes are designed to provide a feeling of advancement and satisfaction, suggesting that the time spent playing the game is not being wasted.
In discussing Overwatch 2, Keller mentioned that the game didn’t seem to offer players enough rewards, a sentiment echoed by some players as well as an internal critique. However, he emphasized that the loot box system they use enables them to be quite generous in rewarding their players with loot boxes.
Keller explained that Overwatch 2 differs from its predecessor, Overwatch 1, as the former is still available for free while the latter was a paid game. Additionally, newly released skins in the shop won’t become accessible through loot boxes until an upcoming season has passed. However, the team plans to distribute plenty of loot boxes, particularly with their reintroduction.
Keller stated that the new items won’t be available until next season, but they will eventually be added to the treasure chests. In Season 15, we’re planning to go all out: there are Twitch drops, events, and a Discord program – if you play throughout the season, you could earn more than 100 treasure chests for free.
