John Malkovich is preparing for his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as an unnamed character in the upcoming film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” this summer, but it’s not the first time he’s been approached by Marvel. In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Malkovich shared that he had declined several Marvel roles in the past due to insufficient compensation.
Malkovich stated that the fact he didn’t participate had nothing to do with artistic reasons. He simply disliked the business arrangements and found the projects extremely demanding. If he was expected to dangle from a crane for six months in front of a green screen, he wanted fair compensation. If they weren’t willing to pay, that was fine, but he didn’t want to participate because he’d rather be performing on stage, directing a play, or engaging in some other activity.
John Malkovich found it surprising that shooting “The Fantastic Four” wasn’t too different from acting in a play, as it involved creating scenes and actions with imaginary elements. He shared this observation with GQ, mentioning that he accepted the film role mainly to collaborate with director Matt Shaman once more, following their work together on “Cut Bank” in 2014.
In a brief cameo, John Malkovich, sporting a beard, made an appearance in the recently released online teaser for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Marvel enthusiasts are intrigued, suggesting that his character could be Ivan Kragoff, a malevolent figure named Red Ghost, who battles the Fantastic Four in the comics. Known as a Soviet scientist, Red Ghost mirrors the team’s space accident, thereby gaining the power to become intangible. Furthermore, he creates a group of super-intelligent apes with powers reminiscent of the Fantastic Four.
“The Fantastic Four: The First Steps” opens in theaters July 25 from Disney and Marvel Studios.
