Despite frequent appearances as President Joe Biden and a resurrection of his iconic Church Lady character earlier this season, Dana Carvey was absent from the “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” that aired on Sunday. Could it be that he had scheduling conflicts or perhaps a different role to play in another segment?
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I found myself in the unfortunate position of learning that my cherished friend and comedy legend, Dana Carvey, was unfortunately down with a severe flu, leaving him unable to attend an event we both were looking forward to. This undoubtedly explains his absence, yet his longtime companion and podcast partner, David Spade, graced the occasion instead. With their shared history on Saturday Night Live from 1986 to 1993 and numerous guest appearances since then, I have no doubt that Dana will share insights into this incident in the upcoming episode of their delightful podcast “Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade,” which typically airs every Wednesday.
Due to his high level of activity this season on “SNL,” and being considered among the greats in the history of “SNL” cast members, Carvey’s absence was definitely noticeable. Other notable former “SNL” stars who didn’t make an appearance included Bill Hader, a member from 2005 to 2013, and Dan Aykroyd, who was on the show from 1975 to 1979.
Since Carvey has been really active this season on “SNL” and is known as one of the best cast members ever, it was obvious that his absence was missed. Other big names from “SNL” who weren’t there included Bill Hader (who was a part of the show from 2005 to 2013) and Dan Aykroyd (who was on the show from 1975 to 1979).
The representative stated that Hader had a long-standing scheduling issue preventing him from attending the event.
Aykroyd’s departure seemed uncertain, as the remaining original “Saturday Night Live” cast members were present: Garrett Morris who made an appearance on stage, Laraine Newman featured in a previously recorded skit, and both Jane Curtin and Chevy Chase were also there.
Aykroyd shared on X that day: “Feeling proud to have co-created SNL with everyone who was part of it four years ago, fifty years back. This broadcast is as significant as the next moon landing. Comedy legends of our era came together under the protection of America’s finest.
In an interview with AV Club in November, Aykroyd expressed some conditions for his participation: “My involvement depends on how I can contribute. To put it simply, it’s about how I can serve them most effectively. How I can best serve Lorne and the entire project. That will decide whether I participate or not.
Apart from them, two former hosts of “Weekend Update,” Colin Quinn and Dennis Miller, were absent. Quinn, as per his social media post, was doing a stand-up comedy show in Raleigh, North Carolina on February 16, which coincided with the “SNL” special.
