presently, the PlayStation 5 is enjoying its peak, yet curiosity about what follows never ceases. It’s been rumored that the PS6 is under development, and as per ex-PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, a launch in 2028 seems fitting.
As a gamer, I’m expressing my thoughts to VentureBeat. The last console generation spanned around seven years, and if that pattern continues, the PS6 might debut in 2027. However, that timeline seems a bit too rushed for me. To clarify, I don’t have any insider knowledge about the PS6, but if it launches in 2028, that feels like a more appropriate timeframe to me.
It’s been suggested, following a Microsoft leak, that the next Xbox could potentially launch in 2028; however, it’s important to note this information might not be accurate as plans can always evolve. On the other hand, Yoshida mused about the possibility of both the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles being released in the same year.
In line with past practices, they both launched during the same month of the same year – namely, November 2020, much like how the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S did.
Yoshida explained that the PS5’s progress during its generation was temporarily hindered by manufacturing problems caused by COVID-19 pandemic and a lack of necessary components. Surpassing all expectations, the PS5 achieved its best sales quarter ever, pushing the number of units sold beyond 75 million. In contrast to the PS5’s success, the sales of the PS4 in the US during their first 50 months have been surpassed, while the Xbox Series X|S sales trail behind those of the Xbox One by comparison.
In 2024, it was announced that Intel had proposed an impressive offer in collaboration with Sony for Intel’s chips to be utilized in the PS6. Yet, it seems Sony chose AMD over this partnership. At present, AMD is responsible for powering both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
As a former gamer at Sony for over three decades, stepping out of the company earlier this year has given me a newfound freedom to share my thoughts openly. I can now schedule interviews at my convenience and express my opinions candidly, which I am definitely doing!
Recently, I mentioned that I was essentially forced to take on a role within Sony focusing on independent games. They presented me with an ultimatum: accept this position or part ways with the company.
When it comes to the Switch 2 reveal, I must admit I was underwhelmed. It seemed to lack the element of surprise that is so crucial in gaming events.
Moreover, I’ve been pondering the absence of a Bloodborne remaster and have a theory about it. And surprisingly, Horizon: Forbidden West didn’t sell as well as I had anticipated.
