1923 stands out as quite impressive within the Yellowstone series, however, according to Taylor Sheridan’s assessment, it could potentially be the costliest debut season in television history.
1923 broke free from Montana’s boundaries to offer readers a globe-trotting love story. While Jacob and Clara Dutton managed the ranch, Spencer Dutton and Alexandra embarked on an international journey, setting sail on ships and confronting elephants along the way.
The shift from the confines of the Dutton ranch clearly impacted the cost, as evidenced by the final price. Additionally, having Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in the cast would’ve significantly increased the cast’s salary.
Yet, Taylor Sheridan, the show’s creator, holds significant anticipation for this prequel series, given that he has labeled it among the costliest seasons in TV production history.
Taylor Sheridan says 1923 more expensive than Game of Thrones
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan stated, “You’ll see for yourself, but let me make this clear: I believe that the production costs for 1883 surpassed those of any other television series’ first season ever produced. It was significantly more costly.
As for the budget of Game of Thrones, I can’t say for certain, but it seems unlikely that it could have been anything less than this amount.
Initially, it’s accurate to say that: The initial season of 1923 is said to have a price tag of approximately $200 million, which equates to about half a million dollars per minute of airtime. Contrastingly, the first season of Game of Thrones had a budget ranging from $50-$60 million.
Nonetheless, it’s not the costliest debut TV series in history. In contrast, the initial season of The Rings of Power, the Lord of the Rings prequel, outweighs it with a whopping $465 million budget.

1923 falls within Paramount’s yearly budget for the Sheridan productions, as they are said to allocate approximately $500 million per year for these projects.
1923’s production costs are much higher for a reason
It appears that the high cost of 1923 is due to several factors. Firstly, a significant portion of the series was filmed across various African locations, spanning at least four different countries. Additionally, an impressive level of detail was incorporated into the background scenes, featuring around six thousand sheep and three thousand cattle.
As Sheridan describes it, 1923 is the “Lawrence of Arabia” of TV shows.
Sheridan additionally increased the episode count for Season 2, explaining to Paramount, “I need to produce more episodes to wrap up this tale.
He commented, “What I’ve found fantastic about Paramount is their adaptability towards storytellers, and specifically, towards me as a storyteller.
They plan to create additional episodes since I find them necessary to narrate the story. Considering that each episode costs $22 million, asking for eight more episodes amounts to requesting a whopping $150 million, which is quite a significant figure.
1923 Season 2 premieres on Paramount+ on February 23.
