In a new high, Counter-Strike 2 drew an impressive crowd of gamers, even if it didn’t quite reach the peak player numbers seen during CS:GO’s heyday.
Over the past weekend, numerous games experienced success. The latest challenge in “Helldivers 2” drew hordes of freedom fighters to Fenrir III, while “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2” saw over 200,000 Steam users enjoying themselves (despite falling short of last week’s record).
CS 2 record behind CS:GO
Despite the outcomes of various games, they pale in comparison to the impressive new record set by the “second” CS version. Yesterday, an astounding 1.74 million players participated, which is approximately 70,000 fewer than the peak of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive from nearly two years ago. However, it still ranks as the second-highest result in the game’s history.
CS 2 remains incredibly sought-after, yet its sales figures fall far short of the astounding peak reached by PUBG. However, in the previous year alone, two games have managed to exceed the sales record set by CS from May 2023.
Without a doubt, the game “Counter-Strike” is almost always ranked number one among the most played games on Valve’s platform. It enjoys a substantial advantage: at the time this text was written, approximately 900,000 individuals were engaged in playing “CS 2”. This figure far outnumbers the combined total of those playing the next two popular titles. Even when you factor in players of “Marvel Rivals” (currently holding 4th place), “Counter-Strike 2” still boasts a considerably larger player base.
A concern arises due to the widespread adoption of CS 2, as frequent player complaints surface, urging Valve to tackle the existing glitches and cheating incidents.
Not just Deadlock?
What caught the attention of some gamers, rather than the “record” of CS, was an unspecified title that appeared to be associated with Valve and surfaced in the Steam database.
Initially, the title was set to debut in our files on January 2025. Since then, the application has undergone numerous updates, with the latest one taking place on February 15th. It’s intriguing to note that this unidentified game operates on its own server. Any connection with the most recent Valve game was swiftly dismissed. Instead, it seems more plausible that the app is connected to the title that surfaced at the beginning of last month.
Well, as a gamer myself, I couldn’t help but jump on the bandwagon when this enigmatic artifact popped up. Some fellow Valve enthusiasts have linked it to an intriguing tweet from actor Mike Shapiro, fueling Half-Life 3 rumors (though I must admit, some fans are quick to claim confirmation). But let’s not get too carried away just yet; the data miners are urging us all to pump the brakes a bit.
It’s not definitely clear that this is a Valve game, let alone which specific one it might be. It could potentially be referred to as HLX (the codename for Half-Life), or it could be its network deathmatch mode. Alternatively, it may bear some resemblance to Aperture Desk Job. As a data miner notes, however, it could also simply turn out to be nothing significant at all.
Many supporters are placing their wagers on this final choice, as they’re growing weary, despite the latest updates, of the supposed facts regarding the upcoming unveiling of Half-Life 3.
