The documentary “Unknown Number: The High School Catfish,” which became a major hit in 2025, is back in the headlines. Director Skye Borgman recently provided an update on Kendra Licari, the person responsible for the events in the film.
A new documentary on Netflix, released August 29th, details a disturbing case that started in October 2020 in Beal City, Michigan. It centers on Lauryn Licari, who was 13 at the time, and her boyfriend, Owen McKenney, who were both targeted by a mysterious online stalker.
As a fan, it was horrifying to learn just how much abuse Lauryn was getting. It wasn’t just a few hateful messages, it was thousands – sometimes up to 30 times *a day*! The messages ranged from awful insults about her appearance to really disturbing sexually explicit comments, and unbelievably, even included people encouraging her to end her life. It was just relentless and incredibly upsetting.
Eventually, the FBI got involved and discovered the person responsible was Lauryn’s mother, Kendra Licari. Skye Borgman recently provided an update on Kendra and also responded to criticism of her documentary, *My Father, the BTK Killer*.
Unknown Number creator hasn’t heard from Kendra Licari
I was reading an interview with Borgman in Variety, and she was talking about her recent Netflix projects, like that crazy *Unknown Number: The High School Catfish* documentary. It’s interesting because she said that even though Kendra Licari was a big part of the show, Borgman hasn’t heard a word from her since it aired!
If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen a lot of memes and jokes about Kendra. A popular trend involves people sharing reactions to the surprising reveal that she was the one doing the cyberstalking.
Borgman admitted she doesn’t know if Kendra has any regrets about being involved, adding, “She hasn’t contacted me, and it was a difficult experience.”
The filmmaker also discussed the negative reaction some people had to Kerri Rawson, the daughter of serial killer Dennis Rader. Rawson appears in the filmmaker’s new true crime documentary, *My Father, the BTK Killer*, where she shares her experiences growing up with her father and learning about his horrific crimes.
Between 1974 and 1991, Dennis Rader murdered ten people and gave the media a name for himself: the BTK killer. BTK stood for his methods – bind, torture, and kill.
My Father, the BTK Killer creator defends Kerri Rawson amid backlash
Some viewers have criticized Rawson, feeling she didn’t adequately express sympathy or support for the people her father harmed.
Since releasing her 2019 memoir, *A Serial Killer’s Daughter: My Story of Faith, Love and Overcoming*, Rawson has openly discussed how her father’s crimes affected her life.
Many people were upset that Kerri Rawson didn’t seem to express sympathy for the victims of her father’s crimes. One person wrote that while it must be difficult to come to terms with her father being a murderer, she shouldn’t make the situation solely about her own feelings, and suggested she donate any money she earns from books or documentaries related to the case.
But many people came to her defense. One person wrote, “I don’t get why people are being so negative towards Kerri Rawson. People are upset she’s sharing how things impacted her, but it’s like they don’t realize her life was affected too!”
Seriously, why is she being silenced? The guy didn’t just destroy the lives of the people he hurt and their families – he wrecked his *own* family too. It’s awful to think about.
Borgman also supported Rawson, explaining that speaking out is an important part of Kerri’s healing process. While it sometimes leads to negative reactions, it’s become central to who she is and what motivates her.
The book was just the beginning, and she felt it was important to create a documentary to share her experiences more openly with the public.
You can now watch “Unknown Number” and “My Father, the BTK Killer” on Netflix. If you’re interested in more true crime stories, you might also want to find out about Adeline Watkins, the connection between Ed Gein and Ted Bundy, and whether Kendra and Shawn Licari are still together.
