In my perspective, Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” has touched a nerve among young Indians, delving into the topics of urban displacement and the bond we forge as our chosen families. This work seems to echo profoundly with us, as we find ourselves traversing life in bustling metropolises.
The novel ‘All We Imagine as Light’ delves into the lives of contemporary working-class women in Mumbai, focusing on three central characters: Prabha (played by Kani Kusruti), a head nurse at a city hospital who is married to a man living in Germany; Anu (Divya Prabha), a new hire at the same hospital; and Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), their fellow worker and cook. The plot revolves around their intertwined lives, with Prabha dealing with advances from a hospital doctor, Anu hiding her romance with a Muslim man against her family’s wishes, and Parvaty struggling to keep her home after an unexpected eviction.
Spirit Media described the movie as a tale that explores the struggles and triumphs of adapting to city life, dealing with feelings of isolation, and appreciating the strength of sisterhood and friendships. They mentioned that these themes mirror the experiences of numerous young individuals navigating modern life’s speed and complexity.
The movie’s multi-language version, complete with captions, has been a hit in various areas. Spirit Media commented that “word of mouth about the film grew stronger each week and spread rapidly across social media platforms.
After receiving Golden Globe nominations for Best Director and Best Film Non-English Language, the movie’s popularity in India surged, allowing Spirit Media to broaden its cinematic reach into secondary cities throughout the nation.
Kapadia stated that the Golden Globe nominations provided a great opportunity to re-promote the movie. The Indian media took notice and covered the story extensively, which brought the film back into focus for many people. As a result of increased interest on Twitter from cities like Bhubaneswar, Kanpur, Chandigarh, and others, we decided to do another round of releases.
Kapadia praises Spirit Media for backing indie cinema, stating, “There are distributors who are open to handling films that aren’t like big studio productions.” She added, “When these two worlds intersect and people begin acknowledging their worth, it would be fantastic for Indian independent movies.
After a successful international awards journey that started with winning the Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, it was re-released. This movie has since been declared the top film of the year by The New York Times, Associated Press, Sight & Sound magazine, and Film Comment critics poll, while garnering Best International Feature accolades from the New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Chicago Film Critics Association, and San Diego Film Critics Society.
With the Oscars drawing near, distribution companies like Janus Films and Sideshow, along with marketing firms such as Cinetic Marketing & PR and Divergent PR, are coordinating the awards campaign for the movie. According to Kapadia, they’re highly skilled at arranging screenings of the film for Academy voters.
Moving forward, Kapadia unveiled plans for an additional pair of movies set in Mumbai, which could potentially make a trilogy. She stated, “I’m considering making two more films in Bombay,” although she emphasized that the idea is still in its infancy. However, she added, “Things can change from month to month.
