On the Famiboards forum, a source known as ZachyCatGames has shared some intriguing insights about the clock speed of the Nvidia GPU embedded in the Switch 2. This information seems consistent with rumors that compare the Switch 2’s performance to that of Steam Deck.
Switch 2 might be as efficient as Steam Deck
Enthusiasts of Nintendo are eagerly anticipating the imminent unveiling of the Switch 2, and recent updates detail what we can expect from the console. In August of last year, When Moore’s Law Is Dead channel shared its leaks, suggesting that the GPU would provide comparable performance to the Steam Deck. More recently, ZachyCatGames has verified that in handheld mode, the graphics will operate at a clock speed of 561 MHz.
When expressed in teraflops, this figure equates to approximately 1.71 TFLOPS, comparable to the Steam Deck’s roughly 1.6 TFLOPS. In stationary mode, the GPU speed is anticipated to double, surpassing 1 GHz and delivering around 3.1 TFLOPS. This should translate to good performance, although, as humorously remarked by commentators, “Pokemon” may still struggle.
Compared to the Steam Deck, another device that could be compared with a potential Switch 2 is the Xbox Series S, a less powerful console from Microsoft. It boasts around 4 TFLOPS of power, giving it a slight advantage over Nintendo’s hardware. However, the Switch 2 might hold an upper hand due to its anticipated use of DLSS technology from Nvidia. This feature enhances the frame rate and enables gaming in scaled 4K resolution, a capability that the Xbox Series S does not possess.
Given that Zachy’s details align with the data leak from a few months back, it seems plausible that the dataminer’s findings are accurate.
