During a recent chat on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Margaret Qualley revealed that it took approximately one year for her skin to heal after the irritation caused by the facial prosthetics used in “The Substance.” The harm was so severe that director Coralie Fargeat had to edit out her face in specific scenes.

In the opening sequence, as they were filming up my skirt, surrounded by palm trees and using lengthy lenses from below, Qualley explained that it was due to her character’s heavily distressed appearance. The film crew could no longer capture her face on camera.

Remarkably, the acne turned out to be advantageous in the Yorgos Lanthimos drama.

Qualley shared that the character with excessive acne was actually her own skin, caused by the makeup. She found it fitting since she was portraying multiple characters and one of them would have her extensive prosthetic acne. It took about a year for her body to heal from it all.
