Several women have publicly alleged instances of sexual misconduct against author Neil Gaiman, who is known for his works such as “The Sandman” and “Coraline,” in a feature article published by New York Magazine. These women shared their accounts about their encounters with him on the record.
Previously in July, Tortoise Media disclosed accusations of sexual assault against Neil Gaiman by two individuals. Subsequently, they produced a six-part podcast titled “Master,” which delved into allegations from five women. Notably, some of these women opted to use just their first names or pseudonyms for privacy reasons, and these claims hadn’t been substantiated by a prominent news outlet until now.
In an article titled “No Safe Word” published by New York Magazine, Lila Shapiro interviewed eight women who had similar experiences with Neil Gaiman. Four of these women were also part of a Tortoise podcast discussion. One of the women, Scarlett Pavlovich, was 22 when she first encountered Amanda Palmer, Gaiman’s then-wife, in New Zealand. They quickly became friends before Palmer asked Pavlovich to babysit her and Gaiman’s 5-year-old child. Pavlovich claimed that during their initial meeting while waiting for the child to finish a playdate, Gaiman suggested a bath in his garden’s claw-foot tub. She alleged that he then entered the tub naked, asked her to sit on his lap, and sexually assaulted her.
According to Pavlovich, he forcefully inserted his fingers into my rear end, attempted to insert his penis there, and then tried to rub his penis between my breasts. I repeatedly said “no” to each of these advances. He also asked if he could ejaculate on my face, but I said no, yet he still did so. Furthermore, he demanded that I refer to him as ‘master’, implying that if I complied, he would leave me alone. He also called me ‘a good girl’ and ‘a good little girl.’ This all happened, as Pavlovich shared with New York Mag.
Pavlovich asserted that this behavior persisted throughout his employment as a babysitter for the family, even going so far as to allege an incident in which he reportedly tried to engage in anal intercourse with her, using butter as a substitute lubricant.
The report states, “Once finished, he referred to her as a ‘servant’ and instructed her to ‘tidy up’ him instead. She objected, stating it wasn’t sanitary. He retorted, ‘Are you challenging your master?’ she remembers. ‘I was forced to clean my own feces with my tongue.’
Gaiman’s representatives clarified on the Tortoise podcast that while some may find BDSM distasteful, it is legally acceptable among consensual adults. However, an article in New York Magazine suggests that some of his accusers had not given their consent or agreed to specific BDSM activities before they occurred, despite previously complying with his requests to be addressed as “master” and maintaining contact with him.
At another time, Gaiman was residing at an Auckland hotel with his son, and requested Pavlovich to look after the child while he received a massage. She claims that afterwards, Gaiman engaged in sexual activity with her, with the child present in the same room. According to Pavlovich, she questioned him, “What on earth are you doing?”, and was left stunned during this incident.
Neil Gaiman has strongly refuted all accusations made against him following the release of the Tortoise podcast, insisting that all interactions were consensual. In response to Pavlovich’s claim about the hotel room incident, his team declared it as “untrue and utterly reprehensible.” At the time, Gaiman’s representatives did not provide a prompt reply to EbMaster’s request for additional comments regarding the New York Magazine article.
Subsequently, Pavlovich continued communicating with Gaiman, at one instance affirming that their encounters were consensual. Later on, she consented to a Non-Disclosure Agreement and reportedly received nine individual payments amounting to $9,200. In January 2023, she submitted a police report alleging sexual assault; however, the investigation has since been concluded, as confirmed by a police representative to NY Mag.
Caroline, who prefers to go by only her first name, subsequently agreed to a Non-Disclosure Agreement following her involvement with Gaiman. In this role, she provided caretaking and occasional babysitting services on Gaiman’s Woodstock, N.Y. property. Their physical relationship commenced after Caroline’s husband left her in December 2017.
As reported by New York Magazine, it’s said that Caroline once dozed off while reading to a child in Neil Gaiman’s bed. Upon his return, he allegedly moved into the center of the bed with his son and then reached over the child to take Caroline’s hand and place it on his genitals. Caroline claimed she swiftly got out of the bed. “He didn’t respect boundaries,” Caroline told New York Magazine. “I remember thinking that there was something seriously off about him.
In December 2021, Caroline stated that Neil Gaiman’s business manager proposed a deal to her for $5,000, asking her to sign an NDA and vacate the premises. However, she countered with a much larger sum – $300,000 – which Gaiman agreed to. Gaiman’s representatives told New York Magazine that “Caroline was the one who initiated the sexual encounters” and denied any involvement in sexual activity with her while his son was present.
A new accuser, Kendra Stout, emerged who was 18 when she first encountered Gaiman at a book signing in Florida. Three years later, their relationship became physical and in 2007, Stout claims he raped her during a trip to the English countryside, despite her repeatedly saying “no” due to a severe urinary tract infection. Stout submitted a police report in October as reported by NY Mag.
Back in 2012, when I was just 22, I had an encounter with Gaiman that left me shaken. We met, and later, after I made it clear I wasn’t interested in any intimate involvement, he allegedly tried to assault me on his tour bus. This is something I shared years later with New York Magazine. Fast forward to today, he reached out and offered a sum of $60,000, stating in a recorded call that it was to cover the costs of therapy, as he put it, to help make amends for the emotional distress caused.
Following the bombshell report by Tortoise in July, various film and TV projects involving Neil Gaiman have been impacted. For instance, Season 3 of “Good Omens” on Amazon Prime Video will now consist of a single extended episode, with Gaiman no longer involved in production. Production on Disney’s movie adaptation of “The Graveyard Book” has been halted, and Netflix has canceled “Dead Boy Detectives.” It’s uncertain if these decisions are linked to the allegations against him. On a positive note, “The Sandman” Season 2 is still slated for release this year on Netflix, as well as Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of “Anansi Boys.” Neither Netflix nor Amazon Prime Video have yet responded to a request for comment regarding the status of these shows from EbMaster.
