Following yet another triumphant weekend at cinemas, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has surpassed a significant sales threshold, earning it entry into an elite group of films with similar achievements.

In simple terms, the movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has surpassed a box office revenue of $200 million within its home market, making it only the second video game adaptation, following “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, to achieve this significant milestone.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made approximately $204.5 million in the US market and around $180 million from foreign territories, totaling $385 million worldwide. On the other hand, The Super Mario Bros. Movie garnered about $575 million domestically and an impressive $786 million internationally, resulting in a massive global earnings of approximately $1.36 billion.

Among all video game adaptations, none has surpassed the $200 million mark in domestic box office revenue. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came closest, garnering approximately $191 million from U.S. theaters in the year 2022.

Compared to other video game movies in terms of global box office earnings, The Super Mario Bros. Movie holds the top spot by a significant margin, amassing a staggering $1.36 billion globally. The 2019 film Pokemon Detective Pikachu ranks second on this list with earnings of $450 million worldwide, which is significantly less than half of what The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed.

2025 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for gaming enthusiasts like myself, with several highly-anticipated video game adaptations hitting the big screen! Kicking things off on April 4th is “A Minecraft Movie”, followed by “Until Dawn” on April 25th. If you’re still craving action, don’t miss “Mortal Kombat 2” on October 24th, and to wrap up the year, there’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” set for release on December 5th! I can hardly wait!

Speaking of the Sonic film franchise, it has amassed over a billion dollars in revenue collectively from its first three installments. The next chapter in this popular series, Sonic Movie 4, is scheduled to hit cinemas in 2027.
