Fernando Torres, the child of renowned Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro, is breaking down the negative perceptions associated with “nepotism kids” in Hollywood-style award ceremonies after receiving her Golden Globe accolade.

After discussing with IndieWire following her Globe-winning performance in “I’m Still Here,” Torres criticized the negative connotation surrounding ‘nepo babies’ as an outdated notion. She described herself as the ‘nepo baby who demonstrated that a nepo baby can indeed have value and significance.’

Torres expressed his disagreement with the notion that a ‘nepotism baby’ should be eliminated at birth. He finds this idea distasteful because learning occurs through experience in one’s environment. The term “nepotism kids,” which signifies individuals from wealthy or famous families who swiftly rise to prominence in their respective fields due to connections, gained widespread attention following New York Magazine’s release of a directory highlighting nepotism kids in entertainment. This article sparked controversy within Hollywood, but Torres believes focusing on this issue isn’t the right approach if we want to attain equality within the industry.

Torres stated, “It’s essential to advocate for quality education for everyone, not just those who have advantages.” He further explained that inequality isn’t solely about the opportunities afforded to the privileged few known as ‘nepo babies.’ Eliminating all such individuals wouldn’t address the root cause of inequality. Instead, he suggested taxing substantial fortunes as a means to combat it. His message also emphasized the importance of universal healthcare and education for everyone.

Torres went on to say, “Stop attacking the privileged few! Today, we’re engaged in misguided battles. We’re immersed in noisy disputes that lead us nowhere. The struggle for equality, the fight for taxing wealth, the struggle to regulate the digital sphere, these are the meaningful struggles. So, let’s open our eyes, people.
