Renowned Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has expressed support for the short film “Aakhri Ride” (The Last Ride), which will be showcased among the top choices at the forthcoming Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Market.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’d say the movie revolves around me, a Mumbai rideshare driver named Aman, who’s in a mad dash to gather dowry money for my sister’s wedding. However, one fateful night takes an unforeseen twist when I pick up a cryptic passenger – none other than a Chudail, a demonic witch from local folklore. This supernatural run-in compels me to grapple with the grim realities of urban existence and moral dilemmas.
A number of movies helmed by Kashyap have been screened at Cannes, including “Kennedy” (2023), “Psycho Raman” (2016), “Ugly” (2013), “Bombay Talkies” (2013) and “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012). Furthermore, several films he has produced have also been showcased at the Croisette, such as “Masaan” (2015), “The Lunchbox” (2013), “Monsoon Shootout” (2013), “The Congress” (2013) and “Udaan” (2010).
Kashyap, who is a producer along with Ranjan Singh, Vishesh Agarwal, and Rajan E.P.K., expresses his appreciation for the script as he found it intriguing. It’s a tale about ordinary characters we often encounter in our daily lives, yet rarely consider the complexities of their personal stories. After watching the film, Kashyap was impressed by its unique style, design, editing, and the nuanced performances. There was an understated complexity in its over-the-top elements that he found captivating. He believes the movie will resonate with audiences worldwide.
Vijesh Rajan and Yashoda Parthasarthy make their directorial debut with this film, having previously worked as motion designers and VFX supervisors for Kashyap since “Gangs of Wasseypur.” They expressed that after years of service in these roles, they felt ready to share a story that held personal significance. Many of their own moments of introspection occurred during late-night conversations in taxis with drivers who offered them unique insights into their own lives.
The movie features actors like Chandan Roy, Aamir Dalvi, Faisal Malik, and Dheer Hira, with the camera work handled by Krish Makhija and the soundtrack composed by Achint Thakkar.
This movie is a joint effort between Flip Films, renowned for their festival-circuiting film “Little Thomas” and short films like “Bhed Bakri Bhoot” that have won awards; Navarasa Pictures, known for producing the series “Shanti Bhavan” on Viacom18; and Plexus Motion Pictures, which is the production company of the directing duo making their first appearance in this project.
Ranjan Singh from Flip Films observes: “This tale, set in Mumbai, seems to have such universal appeal that it appears as if it’s unfolding in real-time in any significant city across the globe.
