In approximately ten years since its last release, Civilization 7 is expected to introduce significant modifications to various aspects of gameplay. Notably, players can switch civilizations throughout the ages, whereas leaders will persist throughout an entire game. In terms of diplomacy in Civilization 7, it introduces a novel twist on a mechanism initially presented in the Civ 6 DLC pack titled Gathering Storm.
Civ 7 Introduces Influence as New Yield for Diplomacy
In Civilization 6, interacting with other leaders was usually akin to haggling over goods, where you might offer gold and iron to possibly acquire cocoa or a painting as the return. However, in Civilization 7, resource trading will be streamlined into a single trade system, allowing diplomacy to focus more on broader strategic concerns rather than minute exchanges.
The recent developer diary for Civ 7 reveals that Influence will be a fresh resource or benefit, marking its debut in the game. Upon reflection, it seems they’ve built upon an idea that was initially presented in the Civilization 6: Gathering Storm expansion pack. This add-on was launched three years following the initial release of Civ 6, and it brought new elements such as environmental impacts and city resource consumption into play.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at how significantly the gameplay experience has evolved since Gathering Storm entered the scene. For me, the most transformative aspect might be the introduction of an entirely new victory type – the Diplomatic Victory. This unique triumph, exclusive to the expansion, allows players to strive for it by amassing a total of 20 Diplomatic Victory points across the entire game.
Now, let’s talk about how these points are acquired. Some can be obtained through late-game civics or the strategic placement of certain wonders. However, the primary source of these points is undoubtedly the World Congress. In Gathering Storm, the relationships you cultivate with City-States and the favors you earn from them start to matter more than ever. Your Diplomatic Favor, a new resource, is influenced by your City-State relations, and even takes a hit when you conquer or occupy foreign capitals.
In essence, Gathering Storm has made diplomacy not just an option, but a vital strategy for success in this game of civilizations!
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled about the unveiling of Influence in Civilization 7! It seems that Firaxis has masterfully leveraged insights gleaned from Gathering Storm and polished them for the upcoming title in this beloved series. Throughout gameplay, Influence accumulates turn by turn, ready to be utilized in diplomatic endeavors such as Endeavors, Sanctions, Treaties, and Espionage. Once employed, these actions can then be backed, endorsed, or declined by other leaders.
It seems that this mechanic is taking over the role of Envoys in Civilization 6, since Influence will play a crucial part in establishing friendships with Independent Powers and turning them into City-States. You can now use Influence to maintain permanent units from City-States, whereas before they were only temporarily available. Moreover, accumulated Influence can be utilized to annex a City-State into your own empire, transforming it into a Settlement within your realm.
Regarding the accumulation of influence, the dev diary mentioned that it will be derived from various sources such as buildings, social policies, characteristics, leaders, special abilities, wonders, and other factors. Just like how Scored Competitions or Aid Requests could earn Diplomatic Victory points in Civilization 6, narrative events can also significantly influence the outcome. With these modifications, it seems that diplomacy will play an even more significant role in Civilization 7.
