92-year-old Bill Byrge, recognized for his role as “Bobby” in numerous “Ernest” comedies, passed away on Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee.
Byrge’s cousin, Sharon Chapman, confirmed his death in a Facebook post.
Today at noon, my cousin Bill Byrge sadly passed away in the Nashville region. He was a radiant spirit who could make people smile effortlessly. Known for playing the character ‘Bobby’ in several Ernest films alongside Jim Varney, he was often joked about being our family’s ‘celebrity.’ However, his status was well-deserved given that he had risen from poverty and embodied love, respect, and faith throughout his life, traits he shared generously with others.”

“Heaven gained a sweet soul today. Love you, Billy. See you soon!” Chapman added.
Born in Tennessee in 1932, Byrge initially worked at the Metro Nashville Public Library before transitioning into a film career. In 1985, he played a gas station attendant in “Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam,” featuring Jim Varney. Later on, Byrge collaborated with Varney, appearing as the character Bobby in the movie “Ernest Saves Christmas” (1988), the TV show “Hey, Vern, It’s Ernest!” (1989), “Ernest Goes to Jail” (1990), “Ernest Scared Stupid” (1991), and “Ernest Goes to School” (1994).
In the “Ernest” series of movies, Jim Varney portrayed the lead character, Ernest P. Worrell, a role he co-created with advertisers Carden & Cherry. The majority of these “Ernest” movies were directed by John R. Cherry III.
Chapman told TMZ that Byrge resumed working as a librarian following Varney’s death in 2000.
