Acclaimed director Gus Van Sant, famous for Academy Award winners “Good Will Hunting” and “Milk,” has joined forces to support the production of “Antinous,” a contemporary drama based on the life and tragic demise of Antinous, a prominent figure in Roman Emperor Hadrian’s life. Artist Stuart Sandford penned the script and will make his directorial debut with this film, set to be his first full-length feature.

The narrative “Antinous” unfolds around a contemporary young actor, who develops the belief that he is the reborn spirit of Antinous. This conviction sets in motion a psychosexual drama that seamlessly blends the opulence of ancient Rome with modern-day Hollywood’s fascination with youth, beauty, and eternal life.

I’m thrilled at the prospect of Stuart Sandford, a gifted artist with a keen eye for both photography and sculpture, crafting a visually stunning movie that draws inspiration from the intriguing bond shared by Hadrian and Antinous.

Sandford expressed that for over a decade, Antinous has been a constant thought, and his tale is one seldom heard by many. As an artist, Sandford’s work merges thoughts from ancient times into modern relevance. This film amplifies this idea significantly. It mirrors ongoing battles with identity, desire, sexuality, obsession, fame, power, and societal norms—struggles that remain as poignant today as they were in antiquity. Antinous’ narrative carries immense weight. His life serves as a reminder of the apprehension and vulnerability that comes with living honestly under oppressive structures.

The production of this project is handled by Ben Charles Edwards from Dreamtown (known for “Quant” and “The Wheels of Heaven”), as well as Kirsty Bell (notable for “A Bird Flew In” and “Don’t Forget Me”). Phil McKenzie, known for “Ronnies”, is the executive producer.

Filming will start around mid-year, using various settings including London, Los Angeles, and Greece. This project is a collaboration with Goldfinch Entertainment, both in terms of production and financing.

For far too long, this tale has been shrouded in obscurity – a young man whose life and demise have left an indelible mark on art, literature, and folklore, yet he remains largely unrecognized,” Edwards stated. “The story of Antinous is not simply ancient history; it mirrors ongoing struggles with self-identity, passion, and societal norms – issues as pertinent today as they were in the past.

Recently completed productions by Dreamtown feature “Video Killed the Radio Star,” headlined by Harriet Cains and Luke Brandon Field, as well as “The Wheels of Heaven” with Mickey Rourke and Geoff Bell in leading roles.
