On Thursday evening, the late-night programs centered around the tragic aftermath of the Los Angeles wildfires and President-elect Trump’s unusual reactions to the situation.
Each day on “The Daily Show,” Desi Lydic showcased a segment where Donald Trump spoke incoherently about fish called smelt, persistently propagating an unsubstantiated claim concerning the region’s water sources.
Trump stated that he attempted to persuade Gavin Newsom to let water flow, which could yield a vast amount of water, but instead it’s being sent towards the Pacific. The reason for this is to protect a small fish called the smelt, even though it can be found in other areas as well. Essentially, he argued that because of the smelt, there is no water available.
In response, Lydic explained that the L.A. fires have no connection to smelt. It’s also important to mention that ‘smelt’ contains one syllable compared to the three in ‘climate change’.”)

Seth Meyers addressed Trump’s wildfire-related conspiracy theories on “Late Night,” responding to a post on Truth Social that accused Governor Gavin Newsom of refusing to sign a water restoration declaration. This alleged action would have allowed millions of gallons of water from excess rain and snowmelt in northern California to be used in areas currently experiencing devastating wildfires. Instead, the governor was said to have prioritized protecting an unimportant fish called a smelt over the people of California. Trump’s post argued that the governor should allow more water to flow into California and claimed that he is responsible for the current disaster, as well as stating that there is insufficient water for fire hydrants and firefighting planes.
Meyers countered with, “Trump mentioned the Water Restoration Declaration, but it seems Newsom declined to sign it. However, I must clarify that there’s no evidence to suggest this document actually exists.” He then switched to a MSNBC segment verifying the non-existence of such a declaration.
In response, Meyers said he relied on the knowledge of the person who claimed that water falling from the sky is known as rain,” or simply “Meyers stated he believed the person when told that rain is heaven’s water.
