He assured that this trial will adhere to existing laws, implying no cause for concern, as the necessary legal frameworks are already in place. No amendments to current laws are needed because the government possesses the essential systems.

This year marks the commencement of our initial venture, with the primary objectives being to maintain competitiveness and avoid missing out on business prospects. During his speech, Pichai highlighted the surging popularity of cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin, whose worth is significantly increasing. Notably, Bitcoin boasts a capped supply of 21 million coins, equivalent to over 2 trillion U.S. dollars, as per his statement. A significant factor driving this project is the substantial interest shown by international tourists.

Bitcoin Payments to Ease Foreign Transactions for Phuket Tourists

During the trial, tourists who have disclosed their Bitcoin holdings can list these on a Thai cryptocurrency exchange, confirm their identity, and utilize the digital money to buy goods and services. The Bitcoins will be swapped into Thai baht by a clearing house, providing a smooth process for both tourists and local businesses. This initiative aims to streamline transactions, particularly benefiting individuals who struggle to exchange foreign assets for local currency.

In Pichai’s example, there are individuals who were once involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and have since relocated to Phuket. These people might struggle to pay the asking price for a property as they only have Thai baht. However, utilizing Bitcoin could make such transactions significantly easier.

In the Huay Phueng district of Kalasin, a group of around 80 locals have embraced using Bitcoin as part of their daily routine. This shift is largely due to a local coffee shop owner who is affectionately called the “King of Huay Phueng.” He has been instrumental in teaching these Thai residents about Satoshi, the smallest unit of Bitcoin, for transactions. Now, various businesses within the community, such as noodle shops, tuk-tuks, and small market stalls, accept Bitcoin as a form of payment.

This indicates that Thailand is prepared to embrace digital currency and delve into the potential advantages it may offer for its tourism sector.
