As a devoted movie lover, I’ve been eagerly anticipating an episode this season where all the ladies bond, and at last, it arrives! But goodness gracious, is this some kind of ironic twist? Have I offended the television gods in some way? We were on such a roll with Missi Pyle’s antics! Sadly, despite our quartet spending most of this episode together, it’s the dullest yet. Supposedly, thanks to Kacey’s “The Good Partner Test,” a tradition passed down through their families, an expansion on the Orange Test, which gained popularity on TikTok last year. Whether it’s original or not, the housemates concur that they should all give this test a shot when it comes to evaluating their romantic interests. However, Whitney has soccer practice. I was about to pull my hair out in exasperation, but luckily, the other girls have noticed she’s been absent, and they manage to persuade her to forgo practice for these boyfriend tests.

Arvind kicks off the movie night, but instead of relaxing and socializing, he’s given tasks. It’s hard for me to believe that Kacey, Kimberly, and Whitney don’t even try to act like they’re enjoying themselves. Arvind arrives prepared for a fun evening, yet ends up peeling oranges, shaping them into dolphins, and removing pith – activities we’ve come to expect from him. Meanwhile, his roommates give him subtle thumbs-up gestures and barely speak, making the scene feel unenjoyable. To be honest, this situation doesn’t tell me anything new about these characters or bring any real entertainment value. I prefer lighthearted comedies like Cougar Town, but this scene seems too detached from reality to provide the same enjoyment. In fact, it makes me wonder if a Turing test could be administered here to determine if this is even a realistic interaction!

Kacey and Kimberly share a playful moment discussing their preference for partners who connect with their grandparents. Then, it’s Cooper’s turn, and what he does to that orange could potentially be considered illegal in some places! However, kudos to the sound team, as they managed to mic the orange! But Cooper passes the “Coaster Test,” meaning he didn’t ask for a coaster despite the table being covered with traps. Would he dare place his drink on the American flag or a picture of Kacey’s grandmother? Absolutely not! He holds it awkwardly while the girls go to the bathroom, turning the situation into a spy-like scenario that lasts about four minutes. There’s even some imitation Ocean’s Eleven music playing as they send in “Whitney’s warm, damp teammate” for a wardrobe change right in the middle of the living room, where everyone can see. Go girl! Cooper refuses to look. The scene is quite unusual, and it doesn’t seem like anyone is enjoying themselves. Are you? I certainly am not!

In simpler terms, Whitney is reluctant to invite Isaiah over for a test, keeping the true reason hidden. She’s curious to see if he likes her genuine self rather than the idealized version she presents. However, things take an unexpected turn when she playfully throws an orange at him and calls out a rude remark, which he takes as unprofessional behavior. Isaiah wins over the crowd by passing the “candle test” (a fire alarm prank), but Whitney’s dirty room is so filthy it requires federal attention, causing Isaiah to leave promptly. Bela questions Whitney about her strange behavior during the test, suspecting she wanted Isaiah to fail. Under pressure, Whitney admits she kissed someone else. She doesn’t reveal it was Canaan, but her reaction is diverted by Kacey’s immediate offense to hearing about infidelity. I find myself sympathizing with Whitney, as her relationship with Isaiah seems strained from the start, and I question the timing of her confession, although it’s theoretically possible that she would visit an ex’s house only to kiss him… but still, it’s a bit suspicious.

Brian enters, takes one look around, and instantly grasps the situation. He’s always eager for challenges, ready to respond to any queries they throw at him. Remarkably, he aces the test, even though their relationship is still in its infancy. Kimberly: “I haven’t responded to your text in eight hours; do you think I’ve been kidnapped or something?” Brian: “Not quite. I figured you were at the library, cramming for your exams and dealing with campus’s notorious poor reception.” That comment made me chuckle! As for the final question – what would an ex say about him – he flips it back to them. They confess a variety of relationship mishaps, such as Whitney snooping through phones and Bela performing celebrity impressions during and after conversations (quite relatable). Once Brian departs, Whitney surprises them with a surprise guest: Canaan! Naturally, he handles it gracefully; their chemistry has always been exceptional. He teases her about the orange thing but is tender in his comments about her messy room, braving the clutter to save his hoodie. The most significant point is that Whitney genuinely enjoys spending time with him.

Following the departure of all their respective partners, Whitney and Kacey reconcile, Kimberly seeks out Brian, and Bela hurries to Arvind. She considers him the best person she’s ever dated, but begins calculating how quickly she can discover something that diminishes his perfection. In less than 30 seconds, Arvind discloses he has slept with two people, and Bela informs him her (reasonable) number is 20. He reacts with astonishment, “TWENTY?!” before picking up Proust. I’m a bit taken aback that Bela doesn’t challenge him on this, as it seems she understands the reason for his behavior, yet remains silent. Meanwhile, in the most stunning sweater I’ve ever seen, Whitney sends Canaan a picture of her tidy room, delighted when he calls it the sexiest thing she’s ever shared. However, her coach texts her to scold her for missing practice. My hopes are pinned on something happening between them in the next two episodes! Lastly, Kacey visits Calvin to discuss his infidelity and what was wrong with her. Naturally, he replies there was nothing wrong with her, but admits that he can’t help but blame their mutual promise for making the wait for sex difficult. Predictably, this episode concludes with Kacey texting Cooper that she’s ready for intimacy… but I question whether she truly means it! We have two episodes left, and I guarantee we will navigate through them together!

Office Hours

I’m quite pleased that Taylor wasn’t able to influence the situation, even though she was with Ash at the beginning of the episode. It seems like they might be dating, don’t you think?

• We desperately needed Lila in this episode.
