Robert, commonly known as “Bob,” who had been the president of Laemmle Theatres based in Los Angeles and ran the business until his son Greg succeeded him in 2004, passed away on Thursday in Santa Monica. He was 89 years old.
1938 saw the arrival of Bob Laemmle in the U.S., having been born in Paris and accompanied by parents escaping Nazi persecution. After graduating from Marshall High School, where he excelled at basketball, and earning a degree from Cal State L.A. and an MBA from UCLA, Bob went on to help establish Laemmle Theatres that same year alongside his father Max and uncle Kurt Laemmle – both German immigrants who were relatives of Universal Pictures founder Carl Laemmle.
At age 14, Bob Laemmle began his career in his father’s theater, specifically at their initial location situated in the Highland Park district. He shared this information in a booklet marking the 75th anniversary of the Laemmle business. After spending some time as a trainee in banking, he formally joined the family enterprise in 1963 to assist in opening a new branch in Pasadena. At that time, the only existing Laemmle location was based in Los Feliz.
Bob Laemmle significantly transformed the perception of an “art-house cinema,” by carefully selecting and creatively promoting movies from various parts of the globe.
In 1983, he expressed his viewpoint that we prioritize individual attention for our product. He emphasized the importance of staying small and close-knit to facilitate this personal handling.”
“Back in 1983, he stated that our approach is to offer individual care for our product. He suggested that maintaining a compact size ensures we can dedicate time to this level of attention.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but appreciate the significance of Laemmle Theatres within Los Angeles’s vibrant cinematic landscape. These theaters have carved out a unique niche by presenting a diverse array of films – from fresh independent and foreign-language productions to timeless classics and re-releases – at their iconic venues like the Royal in West L.A., Monica Film Center in Santa Monica, and several other locations, even stretching as far as Kingston, Wash.
In 2022, I had the privilege of being part of the story told in the documentary titled “Only in Theaters.” As a member of a three-generation family business, I believe we hold a distinctive and intriguing position in Los Angeles. We are the family that has been introducing foreign films to L.A. for generations, and these films serve as an enlightening and inspiring force for many people. This was what Greg Laemmle shared with the Santa Monica Daily Press when our documentary was released.
In the year 2000, Bob and Greg Laemmle founded the Laemmle Charitable Foundation as a means of giving back to their community. This foundation primarily supports local non-profit organizations, with a particular emphasis on initiatives that address social issues and environmental concerns. Previous grant recipients include Heal the Bay, Venice Family Clinic, Westside Food Bank, Tree People, Union Station Homeless Services, Trust for Public Land, and numerous others, all of which align with their mission.
Bob Laemmle received the honor of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French government, much like his father did before him.
He leaves behind his wife Michelle Laemmle, along with children Yvonne Ascher, Leonard Laub, Michael Ascher, Haidee Ascher, David Ascher, Tammy Ascher, Greg Laemmle, Jessica Laemmle, Carri Bisbee, Mitch Needelman, Debbie Needelman, Maitland Finley, and Robert Finley.
