Marc-Alexis Côté, the long-time creative leader of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, is leaving Ubisoft after two decades. This departure comes at a pivotal moment for the company, as it’s currently restructuring and creating a new studio, Vantage Studios, in partnership with Tencent. Vantage Studios will oversee development of major franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six.
- According to official information received by Ubisoft employees, the decision to leave was made by Côté himself. In an email from Vantage Studios’ co-presidents, Charlie Guillemot and Christophe Derenne, they explained that an experienced dev had the chance to take on a leadership role in their new division but turned it down.
- The industry veteran’s decision was met with disappointment from the bosses, but they still believe that the talented teams will keep building on the strong foundations he helped set up. They also remain grateful for his contribution to the development of the Assassin’s Creed series.
Marc-Alexis Côté joined Ubisoft in 2005 as a software engineer, initially working on games for the PSP like *Open Season* and *Surf’s Up*. He later became lead programmer for *Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands*. In 2008, he began contributing to the *Assassin’s Creed* series, playing a key role in the development of the popular *Brotherhood* game. Since then, he’s continued to help shape the series, eventually becoming a vice president and executive developer.
