Many Destiny 2 gamers have chosen to stop playing, an event that hasn’t taken the community by surprise.
Prior to The Final Shape’s scheduled release in June 2024, IGN shared insights indicating that Bungie developers had concerns about potential additional troubles for the company if the expansion didn’t meet success.
The arrival of the expansion for Destiny 2 earned Bungie widespread acclaim from both critics and players, with a staggering 314,634 concurrent users on Steam alone, nearly breaking its own record on the first day.
Regardless of the game’s remarkable successes, the team behind Destiny let go of 220 staff members by the end of July 2024. Unfortunately, the game itself has not been thriving recently, as its player count has significantly decreased over the past few months.
Destiny 2 suffers massive drop-off of players after Final Shape
Initially identified by Paul Tassi from Forbes, it’s been observed that the player base for the Destiny sequel has significantly decreased by approximately 90% on PC platforms since June 2024.
Currently, according to SteamDB’s records, Destiny 2 has peaked with 36,610 concurrent players over the past 30 days.
There’s been a significant decrease in the number of PC users (over 300,000) who were involved just seven months ago, taking into account that The Final Shape signified the conclusion of Destiny’s conventional seasonal approach.
Discussions on the Destiny 2 subreddit suggest that the community has already grown accustomed to the recent announcements. A popular comment in the thread reads, “Given what we’re receiving as content, it’s no surprise that people aren’t keen on playing.
A player remarked, “Bungie’s statement that Destiny 2 won’t have more yearly expansions suggests the game is being kept alive artificially. It’s not surprising that the number of players might decrease.
Others joined in by expressing that they discontinued their gameplay as the activity became more of an obligation rather than enjoyable. Here’s one response, “With my restricted playtime, I expect to be compensated. I ceased playing because the game felt more like a duty instead of leisure.
The Last Formation left Bungie’s Destiny fans in awe, demonstrating that they still have the ability to astound us. However, there remains some doubt as to whether their current update approach will ever reignite the same level of excitement.
