As a movie critic, I’ve been pondering the intriguing possibility James Gunn, one of the masterminds at DC Studios, has been mulling over. He hinted on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that there might be a chance we could see Robert Pattinson‘s Batman joining the new DC Universe. Now, this Dark Knight made his debut in “The Batman,” which hit the screens last year.
Gunn’s DC Universe took off with the animated series “Creature Commandos” a month ago, but many are looking forward to his upcoming “Superman” film as the official starting point this July. For now, Pattinson’s Batman is operating independently from the DC Universe. But who knows what the future holds?
When asked about integrating Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the DC Universe, Gunn replied, “I’ve given it some thought,” emphasizing that he ponders over many things and discusses them as well.
Or:
Regarding incorporating Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the DC Universe, Gunn admitted, “I’ve been thinking about it.” He clarified, however, that he considers various possibilities and talks about them frequently.
At that moment, Gunn made clear that he is dedicated to not only crafting tales within the DC Universe (DCU), but also creating independent stories, often called “Elseworlds stories.” These are self-contained narratives like “The Batman,” which don’t necessarily align with the DCU. What he yearns for is the liberty to spin Elseworld yarns.
What are Matt Reeves’ thoughts on his lead actor transitioning to James Gunn’s DC Universe? In a conversation with “Happy Sad Confused”, the director expressed his views on this matter during the Golden Globe Awards.
Ultimately, it boils down to if it’s logical,” Reeves explained. “I had a story I wanted to convey, an extensive crime saga. It’s been crucial for me to bring that narrative to life, and James and Peter have been incredibly supportive of this vision. They’re allowing us to do just that. As for the future, I can’t predict it. Frankly, I’m focusing on getting ‘The Batman Part II’ production underway, which is my top priority right now.
What if they choose Rob for the role of Batman in DCU, Horowitz wondered next.
“I don’t know,” Reeves responded. “We will have to see where that goes.”
It’s anticipated that ‘The Batman Sequel’ will begin filming this year. Warner Bros. revealed last month that the movie’s original release date, October 2, 2026, has been postponed to October 1, 2027. Director Gunn has justified the delay, explaining to fans via Threads that such extended breaks between big-budget films and their sequels are often standard practice.
In truth, it’s quite typical to see a gap of five years or more in the release of sequels. For instance, there was a seven-year interval between ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens,’ fourteen years between ‘The Incredibles,’ seven years between the initial two ‘Terminators,’ thirteen years between ‘Avatars,’ and thirty-six years between the first and second ‘Top Gun’ films. Not to forget, there was a six-year gap between ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2’ and its subsequent volume.
Previously, Gunn shared on Threads that the release date for “The Batman Part II” was delayed as the final script wasn’t ready yet. According to Gunn’s policy at DC Studios, no movie begins shooting unless the script is completely written first.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m always striving to create the finest film I can possibly conceive, and it’s impossible to predict precisely how long that creative journey will take. Once the script is complete, there’s typically around two years dedicated to pre-production, filming, and post-production for major productions.
Although “The Batman Part II” won’t be a part of the DC Universe, it continues to be worked on under the DC Studios label led by Gunn.
