A “Holes” TV series has been ordered to pilot at Disney+, EbMaster has learned exclusively.

A possible adaptation for the upcoming series is inspired by Louis Sachar’s book with the identical title, which was earlier brought to life as a 2003 movie by Walt Disney Pictures.

Alina Mankin takes on dual roles as both writer and executive producer. Liz Phang, meanwhile, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Drew Goddard, through his company Goddard Textiles, along with Sarah Esberg, will also be executive producers. The film’s producer, Walden Media, is working on the pilot and has been trying to develop a TV series based on the book for quite some time now, as reported by sources. Mike Medavoy and Shamrock, the rights holder, are set to executive produce. Andrea Massaro of Goddard Textiles works as a co-executive producer. The studio responsible is 20th Television, where Drew Goddard is currently based.

As a cinephile, I’m excited about this upcoming project that’s a fresh take on Louis Sachar’s 1998 classic book. In it, I find myself in a detention center under the watch of a harsh warden who makes us, the campers, dig holes for some unknown reason.

The book narrates the tale of Stanley Yelnats, an unfortunate boy wrongfully sent to a juvenile correctional facility. Imprisoned at Camp Green Lake, Stanley spends each day digging holes in a barren lake bed. However, as events unfold, Stanley uncovers that his own background and the history of his family are intricately linked with Camp Green Lake in a manner he could never have foreseen.

Published in 1998, “Holes” became a remarkable success, earning both the National Book Award and Newbery Medal. This beloved title has sold millions of copies so far. Apart from “Holes”, Louis Sachar has penned numerous other books such as the well-known “Wayside School” series and “Marvin Redpost” novels. Interestingly, he authored “Stanley Yelnats’ Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake” before the film adaptation was released, and later wrote the spinoff book “Small Steps”, which focuses on the character Theodore “Armpit” Johnson from “Holes”.

For her entire career, my mother has been a school teacher and, in that role, she’s functioned as an unofficial book finder for Goddard Textiles,” Goddard stated in an interview with EbMaster. “She’s always aware of what children are interested in before others catch on. The first book she recommended to me was ‘Holes’, which was in the late 90s, and she was certain it would become a sensation. It’s rewarding to complete the circle for Mrs. Goddard and her sixth grade class with this.

2003 saw the release of “Holes”, a movie adaptation, featuring Shia LaBeouf in the role of Stanley. Alongside him were stars like Sigourney Weaver, Khleo Thomas, Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson, Patricia Arquette, Dulé Hill, and Eartha Kitt. The screenplay was penned by Louis Sachar himself, with Andrew Davis taking the helm as director. This film proved to be a commercial triumph, earning approximately $71 million globally while having a reported production cost of $20 million.

Apart from the popular show “Lodge 49,” which gained critical acclaim, Mankin’s previous TV work includes the series “Katy Keene” on The CW, “The Mindy Project” on Fox/Hulu, and “Anne with an E” on Netflix. On the other hand, Phang has been involved in critically praised shows such as “Yellowjackets” on Showtime, “Foundation” on Apple TV+, as well as “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Locke & Key,” both on Netflix.

Goddard commented, ‘They’ve done an exceptional job preserving Louis Sachar’s distinctive essence.’ To reveal any further details of what’s to come would ruin the surprise.
