Tony Chambers, who heads theatrical distribution at Disney, will be stepping down from that position to assume the role of President for the Walt Disney Company in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Jan Koeppen, who’s been serving as regional lead for six years, is stepping down in February due to a restructuring of Disney’s entertainment business in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). Chambers will take over his role, reporting directly to Disney Entertainment co-chairmen Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, as well as ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro. In the coming days, Disney is expected to announce a new global head for theatrical distribution.
As someone who greatly appreciates the significance of the EMEA region to our global business success, I’m thrilled to witness the seamless transition between two exceptional leaders in shaping our entertainment strategy there. Tony Chambers, a seasoned executive with a collaborative approach and a strong reputation across EMEA and within our company, is stepping into an important new role. I am eagerly anticipating our continued growth in EMEA and globally, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for Jan’s exceptional leadership. His contributions have left a lasting impact on this team and the company during his time here.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that The Walt Disney Company, with its vast reach, is actively expanding its influence across 130 markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Over the next five years, this entertainment giant plans to invest an astounding $5 billion to churn out even more blockbuster films and TV series within this region. This investment will also include creating local originals tailored for Disney+, our beloved streaming service, ensuring a diverse and engaging content library for viewers like us!
In the revised organizational model, American head honchos of international corporations will exercise direct control over the local businesses, managing these teams and determining strategies in sectors such as consumer sales directly, ad placements, content distribution, networks, marketing for studios, movie distribution, and sports ventures. Presidents in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region will maintain profit-and-loss responsibility for their assigned businesses and continue serving as the company’s regional ambassador. This role involves unifying strategic objectives and financial reports, coordinating teams at a regional level, and spearheading projects across various business units, excluding Disney Experiences. They will also supervise shared departments like human resources, communications, and finance, according to a company announcement.
For the past three decades, Chambers has been a key figure at Disney. Currently, his role involves overseeing global film distribution and home entertainment under the extensive Disney brand encompassing Walt Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight Pictures, since 2021. Before this, he held the position of senior VP for studio distribution in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He first joined Disney back in 1995, where he occupied various roles such as head of studio sales and distribution across the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, and general manager of emerging markets, managing operations in the Middle East, Israel, Africa, Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus.
Chambers expressed great pride in taking charge of the exceptional EMEA team in their new role, as he stated. This region is vibrant and has undergone significant, positive transformations over the past few years, and Chambers is excited to capitalize on this progress by driving further development.
In his role as the appointed president for Walt Disney Company EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) since 2019, Koeppen managed Disney’s business interests across various sectors including Disney+, films, television, content licensing, local original productions, stage plays, strategy, and business development within this region. Prior to his tenure with Disney, Koeppen held the positions of president for Fox Networks Group in Europe and Africa and chief operating officer for 21st Century Fox in Europe and Asia.
Koeppen shared: “I’ve been deeply appreciative of the six fantastic years I spent at Disney, collaborating with some exceptionally gifted and innovative individuals during a time of significant change and expansion. As we introduced and solidified Disney+ in this region, it’s with a content heart and immense pride that I bid farewell to the outstanding Disney EMEA team.
