On Monday, Pixomondo – a VFX studio owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment – is set to reveal a novel vehicle-filming system at CES, the tech company’s annual press conference.
As a captivated admirer, I’d like to share my excitement about PXO AKIRA, a remarkable system that unites a robotic camera crane with a specially designed motion platform, LED volume technology, and an array of filming tools. This unique blend is marketed as a comprehensive solution for filming vehicles and seamlessly integrating them into scenes, offering a one-stop approach to cinematography.
This platform for the system’s movement support allows various vehicles such as cars, boats, helicopters, and airplanes. It is engineered to rotate a full 360 degrees and synchronize instantly with a virtual world, creating lifelike motion sensations. Notably, each car tire on this platform moves separately.
The Techno Dolly camera crane can be programmed for accurate movements, as stated by PXO. Moreover, it comes equipped with a previsualization platform powered by Unreal Engine, which allows users to construct a digital replica of an LED studio, enabling them to match the virtual environment with reality.
By synchronizing with an LED’s volume content, this enables filmmakers to modify locations, time periods, and weather scenarios concurrently with vehicle trajectories, camera placements, and driver actions. Additionally, the system incorporates a driving simulator, allowing users to navigate the route within a virtual setting.
According to PXO CEO Jonny Slow, PXO and Sony aim to equip filmmakers with more creative freedom by exploring innovative frontiers in virtual production, harnessing the power of cutting-edge real-time technology.
In 2022, Sony became the owner of PXO. This company specializes in visualization, virtual production, and visual effects. It has played a significant role in the VFX that won awards for films such as Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” and HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, and more recently, it contributed to “House of the Dragon” and “The Boys”.
