2025 at CES saw AMD unveiling its upcoming 9070-series graphics cards – the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070. The company kept mum about pricing and release dates for these innovative components, but did give a sneak peek into the anticipated features and performance of the new GPUs.
During the company’s presentation, they didn’t reveal specific details about the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, but it is known that these models are based on AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture. They incorporate AMD’s second-gen AI accelerators, second-gen radiance display engine, and third-gen ray-tracing accelerators. AMD anticipates the performance to be similar to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 Super, placing the RX 9070 series in a mid-range category of graphics cards. However, it remains to be seen how they will measure up against Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 5000-series GPUs, which are also slated for unveiling at CES this week.
It was indeed verified that the RNA 4 architecture of GPUs will be compatible with the upcoming FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4), an AI-enhanced resolution upscaling technology, which AMD showcased at CES. FSR 4 shares some resemblance with Nvidia’s DLSS and PS5 Pro’s PSSR upscaling tech, but it has been tailored for the new AI accelerators in the RX 9070 series. The debut of FSR 4 is planned alongside the release of the new Radeon 9070 GPUs, and it will be compatible with any games that currently use FSR 3.1 or higher, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, as affirmed by Microsoft’s Matt Booty during AMD’s presentation. However, they did not disclose how the upscaling performance of FSR 4 will compare to its current version (FSR 3.5) or Nvidia’s DLSS.
AMD has not disclosed the prices or exact launch dates for the Radeon RX 9070 GPUs yet, but it’s anticipated that the initial rollout will occur in the first quarter of 2025. Several manufacturers, including Acer, Asus, ASRock, Gigabyte, and others, are set to produce models for this series.
New Ryzen 9 Flagship CPUs
During AMD’s CES 2025 presentation, it also introduced its top-tier desktop CPUs, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D, alongside the newly announced GPUs. Although details on pricing and exact release date remain unconfirmed, we now have a more definite timeline for its launch in March 2025, as well as a clearer breakdown of its specifications and potential performance.
The Ryzen 9 9950X3D comes equipped with 16 Zen 5 CPU cores capable of handling 32 threads simultaneously, boasting a top speed of 5.7GHz. It also has a total cache size of 144MB and a power consumption of 170 watts. In comparison, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D offers 12 cores (24 threads), a maximum boost frequency of 5.5GHz, 140MB of cache, and a TDP of 120 watts. AMD claims that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is approximately 10% faster on average than Intel’s current Core i9-285K flagship CPU, with up to a 20% improvement for gaming performance. Its gaming benchmarks are nearly identical to those of AMD’s highly sought-after Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which is known for its scarcity in the market.
Both the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D are scheduled for release in March, though their respective costs remain undisclosed at this time.
If you’re looking for an AMD processor and don’t want to delay your purchase, Amazon has restocked the sought-after Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU at a price of $479. This 8-core, 16-thread processor was released in November and can achieve clock speeds up to 5.2GHz. Additionally, Amazon offers discounts on several older Ryzen 7 processors that still deliver impressive performance, such as the Ryzen 7 7700X for $325 (originally $399) and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D for $359 (previously $449). For those on a tighter budget, consider the Ryzen 5 7600X, now available for $219 (from $299).
