Starting our analysis of the year’s outstanding performances, we delved into the remarkable lead roles from 2024. As per tradition, we’ll kick off with leading actresses, a category brimming with contenders worthy of recognition. Numerous talented actresses graced the screen this year, making it tough to pick just a few. Nevertheless, let’s dive right in!
Notable Recognitions: Kate Winslet (for “Lee”), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (in “Hard Truths”), Saoirse Ronan (from “The Outrun”), Kirsten Dunst (in “Civil War”), Jodie Comer (for “The Bikeriders”), Lily-Rose Depp (in “Nosferatu”), Adria Arjona (for “Hit Man”), Angelina Jolie (in “Maria”), Cate Blanchett (for “Rumours”), Daisy Edgar Jones (in “Twisters”), Lupita Nyong’o (in “A Quiet Place: Day One”), Maika Monroe (in “Longlegs”), Pamela Anderson (in “The Last Showgirl”), Vicky Krieps (in “The Dead Don’t Hurt”)
#5 – Soheila Golestani (“The Seed of the Sacred Fig”)
In Mohammad Rasoulof’s gripping political thriller “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” Soheila Golestani plays a central role, serving as the connecting element that keeps everything in place. Her character is both a wife and mother who finds herself caught between her allegiance to her husband and the safety of their two daughters. Golestani skillfully manages the complex interplay of political and domestic tension, a talent crucial for achieving Rasoulof’s vision.
#4 – Nathalie Emmanuel (“Megalopolis”)
Although “Megalopolis” by Francis Ford Coppola doesn’t often get mentioned in discussions about awards, I must admit that I was captivated by it. One of the film’s standout aspects is Nathalie Emmanuel’s performance, a crucial element of the daring narrative. Emmanuel’s character provides a unique viewpoint on the various themes Coppola is delving into, and she injects some vital emotion amidst the complex corporate and artistic tumult. In essence, Emmanuel serves as our emotional foundation, and her performance deserves acknowledgment for its impact.
#3 – June Squibb (“Thelma”)
Instead, let me offer a different take: June Squibb is a joy to watch in the heartwarming and hilarious film “Thelma”. Her natural talent for comedy and genuine charm shine through once more in this production. Yet, what truly sets her apart is her authenticity that makes a movie like this all the more endearing. Be sure not to miss Squibb’s performance in “Thelma” – she’s simply delightful!
#2 – Christiana Dell’Anna (“Cabrini”)
Back in March, one of the standout performances of the year was given in Alejandro Monteverde’s biographical drama “Cabrini”. Cristiana Dell’Anna delivers a compelling portrayal of Catholic missionary Francesca Cabrini, who dedicated her life to helping immigrant children in 1889 New York City. Her performance is both subtle and impactful, leaving a lasting impression since I first watched it.
#1 – Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”)
Fernanda Torres stands out as one of the more straightforward picks on this list. She’s the driving emotional force behind the Brazilian political thriller “I’m Still Here,” which recounts the real-life story of Eunice Paiva, a woman juggling her role as wife and mother amidst a tumultuous political maelstrom. Torres is fearless in her performance yet manages to display remarkable self-restraint that makes some of the film’s most poignant moments all the more impactful. This role was truly eye-opening for me, and I can’t understand why she isn’t consistently ranked at the top of every Best Actress list.
