In simpler terms, the creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, recently discussed the actor T.O.P., who portrays Thanos in Season 2, expressing hope that audiences would show understanding towards his previous legal issues related to drugs.

In a more casual tone, one could say: Thanos stands out as the most controversial character if there were a Squid Game Season 2. He’s an intriguing blend of eccentricity, detestable, and amusing qualities that create chaos throughout every challenge. His dialogue is peppered with sporadic English phrases.

Although Netflix’s social media platforms have shared videos of the actor, he hasn’t been featured on their South Korean pages. It’s thought this may be because of his past drug controversy; he served a 10-month prison sentence and was suspended from his military service for two years after being convicted for marijuana use.

To the South Korean media outlet Sports Chosun, Hwang openly addressed the worries and negative comments about T.OP., and he stood up for the actor.

Squid Game creator says people should forgive T.O.P.

Prior to selecting T.O.P. for the role of Thanos, Hwang took a look at the past examples of celebrities who made a comeback following marijuana-related controversies… since the incident occurred around six to seven years prior, I believed that the public would be more open to forgiveness by then.

He shared that he was taken aback by the strength of the response, yet he found it difficult to dismiss him immediately. (Via CNA)

I chose to progress and allow his actions to be the judge of his worth. In the end, it’s up to the viewers to decide if they accept him based on their perception of his work and whether they are willing to forgive him. The final call is in the hands of the spectators.

As soon as it was revealed that T.O.P would be cast, Hwang acknowledged the criticism right away. He explained, “We recognized early on that involving him in promotional activities might prove challenging… It’s not that we originally intended to emphasize him and then decided against it due to public opinion, but rather the situation developed that way.

Initially, the scope of the plan was rather confined. I believed that a fair assessment of the character’s qualities and acting abilities should wait until after the series has been unveiled for public viewing.

In a different conversation with People, Hwang expressed that T.O.P likely demonstrated great bravery to play a character, particularly one who had many characteristics resembling aspects of himself that were quite unfavorable. Consequently, Hwang believes it required significant courage from T.O.P to accept this role.

Even though there was a significant break, let me tell you, his performance as a director was exceptional, and I’m extremely pleased with how he developed the character, he noted.
