As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that after three decades gracing our terrestrial TV screens, “Monday Night Raw,” WWE’s iconic weekly program, is making its grand debut on Netflix today! This marks the start of an epic, 10-year, $5 billion global collaboration between this streaming giant and the brand that has captivated us with larger-than-life characters. With this partnership, a world of exciting new opportunities unfolds for fans, the brand, and its superstars alike!
In the United States, the agreement is only for WWE’s weekly “Raw” show. However, in most foreign countries, they will get all three of WWE’s weekly shows: “Raw”, “SmackDown”, and “NXT”. Also included are the company’s Premium Live Events (PLE) and a variety of additional and archived content.
This implies that people across various nations will now be able to watch WWE’s latest content for the first time. This is particularly important for WWE’s international performers since it expands the reach of their performances, enabling friends, family, and hometown fans to easily access their work.
Hailing originally from Madrid, the NXT Tag Team Champion Axiom, stands as the first Spanish superstar to leave a significant mark in WWE. In the year 2024, along with his British partner Nathan Frazier, they formed a formidable duo known as Fraxiom, who enjoyed an impressive reign as champions and were acclaimed by Sports Illustrated as the top tag team worldwide across all promotions. Despite his triumphs, Axiom’s presence in WWE is striking, given that professional wrestling remains a niche interest in Spain and has been hard to come by on television.
Back in 2007-2008, wrestling made quite an impact on our screens, and I must admit, it caught my attention. Although I had some familiarity with it through video games, action figures, and tapes, watching WrestleMania was a game-changer for me. You see, I’ve always been a fan of superheroes and movies, and to me, wrestling seemed like the ultimate fusion of these two worlds that I adore.
Fans of Axiom and Spanish WWE enthusiasts found the return of WWE on television exhilarating, yet brief. Over the past few years, the primary means to witness WWE content in Spain, as well as numerous other countries, has been through the company’s own streaming service, the WWE Network. Unfortunately, programs such as “Raw,” “SmackDown,” and “NXT” were frequently delayed by weeks.

WWE fans in Axiom and Spain experienced a brief but exciting comeback of WWE on television. For several years now, the only way to watch WWE shows in these regions, as well as many others globally, has been through the WWE Network. However, programs such as “Raw,” “SmackDown,” and “NXT” were often delayed by weeks.

The return of WWE on television was a thrill for Axiom’s and Spain’s WWE fans, but it didn’t last long. In recent years, the main method to view WWE programming in these countries, as well as many others worldwide, has been through the WWE Network. Unfortunately, shows like “Raw,” “SmackDown,” and “NXT” were often delayed by weeks.
In Scotland, professional wrestling, including WWE and local independent circuits, has flourished for many years. Notable Scottish wrestlers include Drew McIntyre, a regular headliner and former World Champion, Piper Niven, a former women’s tag team champion, and the duo Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre from the Unholy Union, who won the women’s tag team championship at the “Clash at the Castle” event in Glasgow last June. This dynamic pair is currently embroiled in a fiery feud with some of the division’s top teams.
As a child, Dawn used to watch World Wrestling Entertainment shows, and she recalls the extensive measures her family took just to catch those programs, as they were Pay-Per-View back then. Fortunately, those same shows (PLEs) will soon be accessible in Scotland through Netflix.
Growing up, our resources were limited, so special occasions like pay-per-views were something we saved for as a family – my sisters, uncle, and many others. We’d gather together to enjoy them. However, the ease of access fans will have now with it being on Netflix is a luxury compared to what we experienced back then.
Stephanie Vaquer, the latest addition to NXT and a highly anticipated free-agent signing for 2024, shares her childhood memories of WWE’s scarcity in Chile: “Growing up, WWE was occasionally available on open television, but later shifted to cable. By the time I was around eleven years old, I pleaded repeatedly with my dad to get cable so we could watch wrestling. My father used this as a motivator, promising that we would get cable if I excelled in school and maintained good behavior.
Now, she’s ecstatic that her friends, relatives, and fans of all ages throughout Chile can easily access professional wrestling whenever and wherever they choose. She comments, “WWE is already well-liked in Chile, but I believe the people there are eagerly anticipating watching WWE on Netflix. It will be more convenient than ever before.
Dawn concurs: “Being able to view it at their convenience, and having access to all shows like ‘Raw,’ ‘SmackDown,’ and ‘NXT,’ was something unprecedented in Scotland before,” she notes, highlighting the challenge of a potential nine-hour time difference that European fans faced while trying to stay updated with WWE’s weekly U.S. shows.
Reflecting upon my recent visit to Spain, I can’t help but feel that the WWE’s partnership with Netflix is a game-changer, much like how “Money Heist” skyrocketed in popularity after its acquisition by the streaming giant. Initially, this Spanish crime drama was managing modest viewership on local television, but once Netflix scooped it up, marketed it as an original, and showcased it to a global audience, it transformed into a worldwide sensation and one of their most successful non-English language shows ever.
The tag champion commented, ‘That’s an apt analogy.’ The show ‘Money Heist’ wasn’t well-known to me when it first aired in Spain, but once it appeared on Netflix and was prominently displayed on the home screen, everyone took notice. I believe the same thing will happen in many countries with WWE.
The debut of WWE on Netflix coincides with an expanding diversity in their on-screen content. Over the last two decades, the WWE roster has become progressively international, with each new talent adding a distinctive element that contributes to the evolution and broadens the appeal of the product to a worldwide audience.
Dawn remarks, ‘With all the international superstars across our three brands, it seems as though everything here has been molded around the influences we’ve brought from elsewhere.’
Over the last few years, WWE’s live events have been held overseas more frequently. In 2024, some top-rated and well-received Pay-Per-Views (PLEs) such as Backlash in Lyon, France, Elimination Chamber in Perth, Australia, and Clash at the Castle took place abroad. Given this trend, WWE’s international stars are thrilled about the possibility of performing for their home fans.
Beginning in March, WWE will initiate its Road to WrestleMania series of shows across Europe and broadcast an episode of “SmackDown” in Barcelona. Spanish fans eagerly anticipate seeing Axiom at this event. Currently, no plans have been made for Chile, but Vaquer remains optimistic about making her home-town professional wrestling debut on the WWE roster.
Vaquer expresses, “It’d be an unbelievable realization of a long-held dream for me. Back in 2009, I had the incredible opportunity to witness wrestling live when WWE visited Chile, but ever since becoming a professional, I’ve never stepped into the ring professionally on my home soil. I’ve fought matches all around the globe, yet never in my own country. Therefore, it would be an immense source of pride if my first professional fight as a WWE superstar were to take place in Chile.
Dawn notes that beyond the immediate benefits of WWE becoming accessible in numerous new regions, several of the company’s athletes are enthusiastic about additional opportunities that the Netflix partnership might present. “To be sure, wrestling has a vast fan base, yet it remains somewhat isolated. However, with WWE on Netflix, it could generate entirely new fans who tune in or visit the homepage seeking something fresh and different. Many WWE stars have already made significant strides in the entertainment world, such as John Cena and The Rock, and I believe this partnership will foster more opportunities for these stars to cross over into other areas of entertainment as they become more recognized globally. This is an incredibly exciting prospect for everyone at WWE, as it offers the potential for even greater involvement in the broader entertainment industry.
