Over the past seven years, Destiny 2 has gone through quite a bit, and if it wants to continue for another seven, it could benefit from experiencing more changes like these.
2025 is approaching, and Bungie’s loot-shooter game isn’t doing as well as expected. Over the last year, there have been highs and lows that make it hard to say for sure why the number of players has dropped to all-time lows.
The significant decrease in employee morale, technical problems, and a noticeable lack of enthusiasm in the episodes after “The Final Shape’s” massive critical and commercial triumph could all be contributing factors.
Since the conventional yearly expansion plans are off the table now, Bungie has assured us they’ll be delivering additional content under the codename Frontiers instead.
Despite this, apprehensions persist among fans and creators about the potential future of the sci-fi franchise, as it seems to be experiencing a slowdown (for now, Destiny 2 appears safe, but there’s no guarantee that Sony won’t eventually decide to permanently discontinue it).
Witnessing the problem
The Conclusion of Destiny’s grand Light versus Dark storyline offered a fulfilling ending through The Final Shape, yet it currently grapples with the impact known as the MCU effect. Much like Thanos, upon its downfall, The Witness has left behind an empty space of power.
Instead of referring to them as “Episodes” which are essentially “Seasons” in all but name, they can be described as self-contained story arcs with repetitive plotlines that seem to lack originality. However, these story arcs have been designed to provide a temporary distraction for the Guardians while Bungie focuses on crafting the grand narrative spanning multiple years that follows next.
As a consequence, the players still active in Destiny 2 find themselves in a holding area, uncertain as to when they will be summoned for any significant gameplay.
Even though a viable alternative might endanger the Sol system’s existence, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Frontiers will address the remaining issue at hand.
Fixing the treadmill
It appears that the release of Destiny 3 is not imminent, at least not soon enough to change current unfavorable opinions. While there have been discussions about non-linear campaigns and innovative storytelling in Frontiers, the information available thus far seems to align with what we’ve seen before.
Increasing seasonal events, greater rewards, and additional endgame challenges such as Raids and Dungeons are being introduced to boost player engagement. While these changes may attract a larger or smaller number of players initially, after the initial excitement subsides – as it often does – the game will return to its usual state and potentially experience a decrease in player population over time.
At the heart of Destiny 2, the thrill of pursuing loot has become tedious and unfulfilling. Simultaneously, other aspects have moved more toward Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) gameplay. Instead of acknowledging this issue, weapon crafting merely highlights the disappointment that comes from seeking random upgrades.
In simpler terms, the allure of Exotics and Legendaries has faded because they now primarily serve to fuel an economy instead of challenging players with exciting gameplay. The thrill of discovering that ideal combination of perks no longer feels like the exciting journey it used to be.
In other words, both systems can function simultaneously, but as Destiny 2 keeps aiming for a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) community, the topic of loot should definitely be considered in that plan.
It’s been quite some time for a brand-new level of rarity, surpassing Exotic, to make its appearance. What makes this development particularly significant is the opportunity it offers for players to exhibit their discoveries by customizing ships or clan quarters, as well as engaging in player trading, which are undeniably essential aspects.
As a dedicated gamer diving into Destiny 2, it’s clear that Bungie’s team is leaner than before, which raises doubts about their ability to implement the significant updates this game needs. The saying “evolve or perish” couldn’t be more apt here, considering how much of Destiny 2’s core feels outdated by today’s gaming standards and in dire need of a refresh.
