Mike Milligan, a well-known American television author and producer who contributed to shows like “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons,” has passed away at the age of 77.

Milligan passed away due to severe lung complications at his residence in West Los Angeles, as confirmed by a public relations official, on December 20th.

Milligan was a prominent figure in the Writers Guild of America for over half a century. Working alongside his partner Jay Moriarty, he penned and produced numerous successful TV series, including “Good Times,” “What’s Happening Now,” “Maude,” “Dear John,” “Here and Now,” and “Melba.

Milligan and Moriarty were honored with an NAACP Image Award for their writing and production on the Emmy-winning sitcom “The Jeffersons.” This show was one of the pioneering American sitcoms to address issues like suicide, transgender identity, and white supremacy.

Back in 1992, this duo worked together as co-writers and executive producers on the NBC show “Here and Now”, which starred Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Charles Brown, Daryl Mitchell, and Rachael Crawford. More recently, in 2019, a version of an “All in the Family” episode titled “The Draft Dodger,” originally aired as a holiday special in 1976, was remade exactly word for word in the ABC television event “Live in Front of a Studio Audience”, with Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel. This broadcast, featuring Woody Harrelson playing Archie Bunker and Marisa Tomei portraying Edith, won an Emmy for outstanding variety special.

Milligan hails from Los Angeles, having been born there on January 28, 1947. He earned his degree from Loyola Marymount University in LA. To outmaneuver the draft during the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the Air Force, working as a typist.

Milligan is survived by his wife Jill, his son John, his sister Jeri and his five granddaughters.
