Amazon is getting into business with Melania Trump. And Brett Ratner.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that a documentary film about the former and incoming first lady, directed by Ratner, has been exclusively licensed by the studio for their Prime Video platform. This film promises an extraordinary, backstage glimpse into the life of the first lady and third wife of Donald Trump, according to a representative from the studio.
The movie is set for both cinema and online release, offering an interactive experience. This is because Melania Trump will co-produce it along with Fernando Sulichin from New Element Media. Filming started in December 2024, a month following Donald Trump’s significant re-election victory to regain the presidency.
Amazon is planning a release in the second half of 2025.
The most contentious aspect of the latest project is connected to Ratner, who hasn’t been involved in significant Hollywood productions since 2017 following accusations of sexual misconduct by six women in a Los Angeles Times article. Warner Bros., where he had an exclusive deal, terminated their relationship with him (he maintained his innocence). Independently, a former talent agency assistant accused him of rape on Facebook, which Ratner also denied. He subsequently sued the accuser for defamation, but both parties later dropped their claims. At that time, Ratner decided to withdraw from all Warner Bros.-related activities, expressing concern about any potential negative influence on the studio until his personal matters are resolved.
In addition, he was heavily embroiled in a wide-ranging sex scandal which eventually resulted in Kevin Tsujihara vacating his CEO position at Warner Bros. in 2019. The details of this case surfaced through text exchanges between Ratner and actress Charlotte Kirk, who is young and has autism. These messages suggested that she felt she was used as a means to further a financial deal between Warner Bros. and Ratner, whom she had partnered with in the past through Steven Mnuchin, then Trump’s Treasury Secretary, in a $450 million joint venture known as RatPac-Dune Entertainment with Warner Bros.
Friends of Ratner have shared with EbMaster that he believes there’s a way back for him by creating a documentary, as this type of project requires minimal initial investment and doesn’t require a distributor until later in the production process. Normally, giants like Amazon stay out of documentaries during filming and instead purchase completed films after they’ve been screened at significant film festivals. Ratner had considered directing a documentary on two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins.
It’s not clear how Ratner managed to gain the first lady’s confidence to share her life story with him. Known for directing the Universal thriller “Tower Heist,” which prominently featured Trump International Hotel & Tower, Ratner has been linked to the former and potential president, having visited the film set at least once. It’s rumored that Ratner has been residing part-time in his hometown of Miami since his career took a hit due to scandal.
A representative from Amazon stated: “As production continues and we solidify our release strategy, we’ll reveal further information about the Prime Video project. We can’t wait to bring this extraordinary tale to the screens of our global audience.
Producer Sulichin frequently collaborates with Sean Penn in movies such as “Flag Day” and “Superpower,” and also teams up with Oliver Stone for documentaries featuring Edward Snowden and Brazil’s former president, Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva.
