In contrast to other games developed by FromSoftware in the Souls-like genre, the cooperative game Elden Ring Nightreign does not incorporate a messaging system.
Since the release of Demon’s Souls in 2009, FromSoftware has incorporated helpful social elements into their Souls series games. One of the standout features is a messaging system that lets players share advice, warnings, and other notes for others to discover as they journey through the game world together.
One communication could signal an imminent surprise attack by the adversary in the adjacent room, whereas another might appear merely humorous or trivial.
In their usual fashion, FromSoftware carried on the tradition with Elden Ring and its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. However, it’s important to note that the asynchronous multiplayer element, which was a part of previous games, likely won’t make a comeback for Elden Ring’s cooperative spinoff.
Elden Ring Nightreign dev explains why they removed message system
According to Nightreign’s director, Junya Ishizaki (as quoted in IGN Japan), players will continue to encounter the spirits of other adventurers, but they will no longer be able to leave messages.
According to Ishizaki, the primary factor influencing the decision is the tight schedule, as each cooperative session can only run for approximately 40 minutes.
The developer mentioned that they don’t have the time to compose their own messages nor to read those composed by others.
It’s quite logical to consider this approach, especially when it comes to sending messages. Generally, the best messages are crafted following a player’s exploration of a region and elimination of surrounding threats.
In my gaming journey, Ishizaki mentioned that the sessions are relatively brief, but packed with an intense RPG feel. So, gamers like me should be ready for the usual highs and lows typical of RPGs, all crammed into a compact playtime in Elden Ring.
Players of both PS5 and Xbox Series consoles will have an opportunity to test Nightreign’s performance firsthand as FromSoftware initiates their network testing. Registration for these testing sessions opens on January 10, 2025.
