In 2025, Destiny 2 will venture into unexplored territories by introducing a fresh approach to content delivery. This innovative system aims to minimize gaps between updates and lighten the burden of creating massive yearly expansions.
Starting mid-2025, this daring new chapter unfolds for the ongoing loot shooter game, code-named Frontiers. The first expansion, Apollo, is set to launch in the summer of 2025, followed by Behemoth in winter 2025.
Due to Bungie not clearly explaining yet how these additional updates will shape Destiny 2’s future beyond “The Final Shape”, there is growing concern within the community regarding the game’s future, especially considering a declining number of players.
As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the developer’s outline for the next twelve months and beyond gives me a sense of excitement and anticipation. With the third and final episode, Heresy, on the horizon, it seems we are in store for an epic conclusion to this captivating series. Having followed the saga closely, I eagerly await the final chapter and look forward to seeing how the story unfolds.
What’s Destiny 2’s next Major update?
In simple terms, the third act of the “Revenant” series in Destiny 2 is scheduled to release on January 7, 2025, coinciding with the weekly reset. For more details about what’s included in Revenant’s finale, such as the new Exotic Mission titled “Kell’s Fall” and the Exotic Shotgun named “Slayer’s Fang”, visit our information hub for a comprehensive look.
Episode Heresy (February 4)
The third and concluding installment, titled Episode Heresy, unfolds after Echoes and Revenant, starting from a weekly refresh on February 4.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share that while specifics about new gameplay features are scarce at the moment, Bungie has officially confirmed that Heresy will bring back the colossal ship known as the Dreadnaught from Destiny’s Taken King expansion. This is a return to a familiar battlefield for me and many others in our gaming community. Can’t wait to see what awaits us on this formidable vessel!
It remains unclear whether Oryx’s flagship will offer both the Patrol Zone for exploration and the Court of Oryx activity again, or if it will just be one. However, what is certain is that Guardians can anticipate the typical seasonal elements along with some fresh features, such as the Heretical Arsenal.
Initially mentioned in Bungie’s annual blog post, these weapons are anticipated to follow a similar design as the BRAVE weapons from Into the Light. However, details beyond the studio hinting that they will be easily identifiable and worth investigating have not been disclosed yet.
See below for a summary of what’s known to be included in Episode Heresy so far.
- Seasonal weapons
- Hive-themed armor
- Heretical Arsenal
- New Dungeon
- Seasonal activities
Codename Frontiers
Codename Frontiers is the umbrella term for Destiny 2’s two 2025 expansions, Apollo and Behemoth.
The updates will feature a new take on storytelling with unique, offbeat campaigns, and one of them is said to resemble a non-linear, Metroidvania-style adventure. Each enlargement will be broken down into two main updates, rolled out over the respective periods.
Each expansion generally adopts a consistent structure in terms of content, but there are exceptions. For instance, Raids and Dungeons will rotate, meaning that the initial expansion of each year introduces Raids, while the subsequent expansion focuses on Dungeons.
During the progression of Frontiers, content can be expected to fit into any of the following three main classifications:
1. Exploration: This category covers topics related to the discovery and understanding of new areas or concepts.
2. Development: Here we will delve into how ideas are built upon and refined, often involving practical applications or improvements.
3. Application: This section focuses on real-world examples that demonstrate the use and impact of the explored and developed concepts.

Apollo Expansion (summer 2025)
According to Bungie, the narrative of Apollo will be presented across multiple interconnected plotlines that you’ll uncover and delve into, not following a strictly linear path.
Unlike past yearly releases such as Lightfall and The Final Form, this does not branch off into multiple, non-converging narratives with a conventional, linear mission structure. Instead, any storyline segments that players might overlook during their initial playthrough of Apollo can be revisited at their leisure.
From summer through fall, Apollo is scheduled for two significant upgrades, namely Arsenal and Surge. To prolong the lifespan of Apollo’s Raid, one of these updates will introduce fresh challenges and rewards to earn from the six-player activity. These challenges might resemble existing Raids in structure.
Behemoth Expansion (winter 2025)
Since Behemoth isn’t scheduled for release until the closing of 2025, there is limited information available about it beyond the fact that it will offer an unconventional campaign once more and will introduce a fresh Dungeon as its concluding activity. This endgame activity will be enhanced with updated rewards.
From now on, the Dungeons in Behemoth will not require separate keys for entry, instead they will offer increased rewards such as complete sets of weapons and armor to match those found in Raid zones.
What’s after Frontiers?
Bungie hasn’t given details about what comes after Frontiers yet. Since Behemoth is set to continue until spring 2026, we probably won’t learn anything about the next expansion until later in the year. We’ll update this and all the sections above with new information as soon as it becomes available.
