As an avid moviegoer with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must admit that this weekend’s box office results have been a mixed bag for me. On one hand, it’s always exciting to see new releases like “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” especially when they’re as popular as these two have proven to be.
However, my inner cinephile is still longing for that truly spectacular event film that leaves a lasting impression on audiences and sets new records at the box office. Despite its impressive earnings, “Mufasa” just doesn’t seem to have quite captured the magic of the original 2019 remake, which was a true cinematic experience for me.
On the other hand, I must give credit where it’s due – “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has shown impressive staying power and is poised to surpass its predecessor’s domestic gross, which is no small feat. And let’s not forget about “Nosferatu,” a film that has proven to be one of Focus Features’ top performers in their history – it reminds me of those lesser-known gems that can sometimes steal the show.
All things considered, it’s been an interesting weekend at the movies, and I can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store for us film enthusiasts. But as they say, “the show must go on,” and I suppose that’s just another reason why I love going to the cinema – you never know what surprise is waiting for you next!
Oh, and by the way, I can’t help but wonder if Disney is secretly working on a prequel to their own box office juggernaut, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” titled “Mufasa & Scar: A Tale of Pride.” Now that would be an event film I wouldn’t mind waiting in line for!
This weekend, the holiday movie season is wrapping up with “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” remaining at the top of box office rankings, pulling in families as they prepare for the return to school.
Even though “Mufasa” was generally ahead of “Sonic 3” during weekdays over the holiday, this third release will be its first three-day weekend as number one. It had to bide its time to become the king, but now the Disney prequel has taken the top spot after making an estimated $7.6 million on Friday. The digitally-created animal musical directed by Barry Jenkins has surpassed $150 million in North America and has entered the top 15 highest-earning movies of 2024 domestically.
Despite a sluggish beginning, “Mufasa” saw consistent sales during the holiday season. However, it failed to surpass the $191 million domestic opening weekend earnings of its predecessor, the 2019 remake of “The Lion King”. With a production budget exceeding $200 million, “Mufasa” has generated considerable revenue, particularly abroad. Yet, it hasn’t lived up to expectations as the blockbuster that such a high price tag might imply.
In the meantime, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” from Paramount dropped to second place on Friday with earnings of $6.9 million. The movie adaptation of Sega’s classic speedster platformer is expected to make $20.7 million in its third weekend, pushing its North American total to over $170 million. With just a few days left, it looks like “Sonic 3” might soon surpass the $190 million domestic gross achieved by “Sonic 2” in 2022. Already, plans are underway at Paramount for a fourth film in the franchise.
“The third week saw ‘Nosferatu’ by Focus Features, one of their top historical performers, earning $4.2 million. This figure represents a 42% decrease compared to its earnings during the Christmas weekend debut. By Sunday, it is expected that the domestic total will reach around $69 million.
In its sixth weekend, the movie “Moana 2” by Disney earned approximately $4.1 million on Friday. Earlier this week, it crossed the $900 million mark worldwide, with a strong possibility of overtaking “Despicable Me 4” ($969 million) to become the third-highest earning film of 2024. The film is nearing the $1 billion milestone, a feat achieved only by “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2” last year, both Disney productions as well.
Wicked” is steadily climbing towards the top five earners, adding another $3.3 million during its seventh week in cinemas. Despite being available for premium video-on-demand viewing, the musical adaptation based on Oz continues to attract a good number of audiences and might potentially earn up to $450 million domestically by the end of this weekend.
Located just shy of the top five, the film “A Complete Unknown” by Searchlight Pictures, featuring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, is maintaining a robust performance, earning an estimated $2.6 million on Friday. In its second release following Christmas weekend, it’s projected to experience a decrease of approximately 33%. By Sunday, it will surpass the $40 million mark in domestic box office revenue.
