As a lifelong movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of cinema from the silent era to the digital age, I must say that December 2024 was truly a remarkable month for the U.K. and Ireland box office. The year’s close not only showed an impressive 8% growth over 2022 but also boasted a diverse range of titles that catered to various tastes.
The month’s top performer, “Wicked,” has left me particularly impressed. Having grown up with the Broadway sensation, I was thrilled to see its adaptation live up to my expectations and become the third-highest-grossing musical in U.K. history. I eagerly await the day when it surpasses “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!” and “Wonka.”
Disney’s “Moana 2” was another standout for me, as I have always been a fan of the studio’s animated films. The sequel’s success in December has reminded me of the magical storytelling that Disney is known for, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the new year.
The U.K. & Ireland box office scene continues to be a vibrant one, with a promising slate of releases scheduled for January 2025. As a cinephile, I am excited about Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu,” John Crowley’s “We Live In Time,” and Asif Kapadia’s “2073.” And let’s not forget the much-anticipated Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” which is sure to be a must-watch for music lovers like myself.
In short, December 2024 was a fantastic end to an incredible year for cinema in the U.K. and Ireland, and I can’t wait to see what the new year has in store! Oh, and by the way, did you hear the joke about the movie theater that only shows films with sequels? It went bankrupt… it was all downhill from there! 😉
In December 2024, the U.K. and Ireland box office concluded the year strongly, earning a total of £115.5 million ($143.5 million), which is a 21% jump compared to the previous year’s December earnings of £95.5 million ($118.6 million). This brings the full-year revenue to £1.06 billion ($1.31 billion), equal to 2023 and demonstrating an 8% growth over 2022 figures. The impressive month was fueled by outstanding showings across various films, with “Wicked” taking the lead.
For two months straight, Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” movie adaptation has been the top earner, raking in £23.2 million in December alone, pushing its total earnings to a staggering £55.6 million. This places it as the third highest-grossing film of 2024, with “Inside Out 2” (£59.2 million) and “Deadpool & Wolverine” (£57.5 million) ahead. Interestingly, it also ranks as the third biggest musical box office hit in the U.K. and Ireland, following closely behind “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!” (£65.6 million) and “Wonka” (£63.5 million).
In December, Disney’s “Moana 2” landed at the second position, raking in approximately £21.8 million. With this addition, its overall earnings have reached £36.4 million, exceeding the original film’s entire lifetime box office revenue of £20.6 million. As such, it ended 2024 as the sixth highest-grossing movie of the year. Meanwhile, another Disney production, “Mufasa: The Lion King,” collected £17.4 million in its second week of release, finishing off 2024 ranked at number 13.
In the fourth spot, “Sonic The Hedgehog 3” opened with a whopping £16 million in its first week. This franchise continues to shine, with its past titles earning £19.3 million and £27 million respectively. On the other hand, “Paddington In Peru” collected an additional £6.4 million last December, bringing its total earnings up to £34.2 million. The third installment of this cherished series concludes 2024 as the seventh highest-grossing film of the year, although it lags behind its earlier versions, which raked in £38 million and an impressive £42.7 million each.
In December, “Gladiator II” earned £5.9 million, pushing its overall earnings to £31 million. Ridley Scott’s sequel is poised to surpass the original film’s £31.3 million as Scott’s highest-grossing movie in the region. Meanwhile, Edward Berger’s drama “Conclave” made an additional £3.9 million last month, bringing its total to £5.8 million. Now, “Conclave” ranks as Black Bear’s second most successful film, with “Longlegs” still holding the top spot at £8.1 million in earnings.
wrapping up December’s top-earning films, the Robbie Williams biopic “Better Man” earned £2.9 million in its opening week, outperforming the Telugu-language action film “Pushpa 2 – The Rule” (£1.8 million), followed by “Kalki 2898 AD” (£1.4 million) and “Fighter” (£1 million). Notably, “Pushpa 2 – The Rule” currently holds the title for highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 in the region, with Sony’s “Kraven The Hunter” taking the final spot on the chart with £1.4 million.
Starting January 2025, an impressive lineup of movies is set to kick off the year. Some noteworthy titles include “Nosferatu” by Robert Eggers, “We Live In Time” directed by John Crowley, Asif Kapadia’s “2073,” and Disney’s biopic on Bob Dylan titled “A Complete Unknown.” There are more exciting releases to look forward to as well.
