As a long-time fan of Assassin’s Creed Origins and a dedicated Windows user, I can’t help but feel frustrated by this latest turn of events. The game was a masterpiece when it first came out, and I fondly remember exploring ancient Egypt as Bayek. However, the recent surge in negative reviews is not due to any fault of Ubisoft, but rather a pesky Windows update that’s causing more trouble than a cat on a hot keyboard.
The irony isn’t lost on me. Here I am, eagerly awaiting the Winter Sale for Assassin’s Creed Origins, only to find my game unplayable on the very system I upgraded to – Windows 11 24H2. It’s like receiving a brand new, shiny hidden blade, only to find it’s stuck in its sheath.
Microsoft and Ubisoft are working together to fix this issue, but as of now, the only “fix” seems to be taking a step back to the older version of Windows 11. That’s like saying the best way to deal with a raging fire is to go back to the match that started it!
I can only hope that they manage to quell this digital inferno soon, because I don’t want to miss out on any more adventures in Egypt. And hey, maybe one day we’ll get an update that allows us to assassinate a few Windows bugs while we’re at it!
In December 2024, Assassin’s Creed Origins encountered an unexpected issue, not due to an error from Ubisoft, but rather as a result of a Windows update.
Over time, Ubisoft has faced several performance challenges, particularly on PC platforms. The debut of Watch Dogs: Legion was marred by problems, and even older games such as Watch Dogs 2 continue to struggle with stuttering due to suboptimal optimization, which has been a recurring issue for the company.
Regardless, Assassin’s Creed Origins stood out remarkably. It garnered an 81 Metascore on PlayStation 4 and received acclaim for its graphics, characters, and narrative. However, it has been receiving a wave of unfavorable reviews lately, not due to the typical issues from Ubisoft.
Initially praised with a “Very Positive” rating on Steam in 2017, the game’s standing took a hit in 2025’s recent reviews, shifting to a “Mixed” rating. This change was due to Microsoft’s 24H2 update causing problems such as crashes, black screens, and freezes for numerous players. Although Ubisoft isn’t responsible for these issues, they have negatively impacted the game’s reputation regardless.

It appears that the main problem stems from Microsoft’s recent update for Windows 11, version 24H2. Users who have applied this update have encountered game-halting problems.
In simpler terms, users encountered issues where Ubisoft games such as Assassin’s Creed Origins failed to respond, resulting in black screens instead of the game world set in ancient Egypt (starring Bayek).
Despite Microsoft and Ubisoft being actively engaged in addressing the issue, they haven’t found a long-term resolution as of now. For the moment, the only available workaround is going back to the earlier Windows 11 version 23H2, which isn’t an ideal solution since it’s not particularly convenient.
The backlash is understandable. One player vented on Steam after Ubisoft dropped a 90% discount for the Assassin’s Creed Origins Winter Sale, only for the game to be unplayable on Windows 11 24H2. “Why give a big discount but the game is not playable on PC? SHAME,” they raged.
Moving forward, Ubisoft faces challenges following setbacks such as XDefiant and Star Wars Outlaws. With major releases slated for 2025, including a new Assassin’s Creed game and The Outer Worlds 2, the company has a significant task ahead in demonstrating its prowess.
