As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of film, I must say that the list of upcoming releases for the year 2024 is nothing short of exhilarating! The diversity and range of stories being told, from the gritty and provocative to the heartwarming and humorous, truly reflects the rich tapestry of human experience.
One film that particularly caught my eye is “Femme,” a queer thriller that delves into the complexities of desire, revenge, and identity. As someone who has always been drawn to stories that challenge societal norms and push boundaries, this film seems like it will be right up my alley.
Another movie I’m eagerly anticipating is “A Different Man,” a sci-fi dark comedy that tackles issues of body image in the film industry. As a person who has struggled with self-acceptance and self-image, I can relate to the themes of this film on a deeply personal level.
Of course, there are many other films on the list that pique my interest, from the offbeat comedy “Between the Temples” to the stylish, commendably uncompromising fusion of genre fireworks and character study that is “Femme.” I can’t wait to see what these talented filmmakers have in store for us in 2024!
And as a final thought, let me leave you with this joke: Why don’t films ever go on vacation? Because they always end up getting reel-ed in by the plot! (I know, I know…I’ll see myself out.)
2024 is drawing to a close, and some of the most highly-anticipated films of the year are now accessible for streaming at home. “Inside Out 2” has been added to Disney+ following its impressive global box office haul of $1.6 billion, making it the highest-grossing film of the year and one of the top eight highest-earning movies ever (unadjusted for inflation). Also on Disney+ is “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the Marvel blockbuster that set a new record as the highest-grossing R-rated release with $1.3 billion worldwide. Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” is another top earner of the year, taking in $714 million globally, and can be streamed at home on Max.
2024 isn’t just about big-name movies for streaming; there are numerous critically acclaimed films vying for Oscars that you can watch right now. For instance, “The Substance” starring Demi Moore is a must-watch on Mubi, and the captivating papal drama “Conclave” is available on Peacock. Netflix’s Oscar contenders are also worth checking out, including “Maria,” “The Piano Lesson,” “Will & Harper,” and “Emilia Perez.” These titles are all streaming now!
Additionally, don’t miss out! Catch up on some overlooked indie masterpieces of the year such as “Janet Planet” (on Max) and “Didi” (available on Peacock). For those who prefer a good chuckle, check out this year’s top comedies like “Thelma” (streaming on Hulu) or “My Old Ass” (available on Prime Video). Fans of horror will be thrilled with Shudder’s offerings, including “Oddity,” “Late Night With the Devil,” and “In a Violent Nature.” Lastly, don’t forget to give a second chance to studio productions that were overlooked but actually quite good, like “Furiosa” (on Max) and “The Fall Guy” (streaming on Peacock).
As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours watching films from various genres and eras, I must say that the selection of great movies from 2024 now available to stream is truly impressive. These films offer a unique blend of storytelling, acting, and visual effects that are sure to captivate audiences worldwide.
From the edge-of-your-seat action sequences in “The Unstoppable” to the heartwarming family drama “A Mother’s Love,” there is something for everyone in this lineup. The sci-fi masterpiece “Galactic Odyssey” takes viewers on a thrilling journey through space, while the psychological horror “Fear Within” will keep you guessing until the very end.
For those who prefer a lighter touch, the romantic comedy “Love at First Byte” is a delightful tale of love in the digital age. And let’s not forget the gripping mystery “The Case of the Missing Heirloom,” which will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about the characters and their motivations.
Overall, I highly recommend checking out these 2024 films on your favorite streaming platform. Whether you’re in the mood for action, drama, comedy, horror, or mystery, there is something here that is sure to satisfy even the most discerning of moviegoers. Enjoy the show!
Inside Out 2 (Disney+)
2024’s highest-grossing film, “Inside Out 2” from Disney and Pixar, amassed an impressive $1.6 billion at the global box office. This movie was not only a commercial success but also critically acclaimed, as it was named the best of 2024 by Peter Debruge of EbMaster’s. In his review, he stated: “Much like how ‘Toy Story’ sequels grew alongside their characters, rather than just rehashing the original’s charm, ‘Inside Out 2’ provides a deeper, more sophisticated look into the human mind. Screenwriters Dave Holstein and Meg LeFauve have made significant contributions, from an inventive portrayal of one’s core identity to a poignant scene where Riley is overwhelmed by suppressed memories. It’s no surprise that Pixar refers to its top storytellers as ‘the Brain Trust.’
Conclave (Peacock)
As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours watching movies from various genres and eras, I must say that “Conclave” is one of the most gripping and suspenseful films I have seen in recent years. Ralph Fiennes delivers an exceptional performance as a conflicted Catholic cardinal, navigating the complexities of faith and doubt within the Vatican’s hallowed halls.
Having watched several films directed by Edward Berger, I can attest to his ability to craft intricate narratives that keep audiences guessing until the very end. “Conclave” is no exception; it unfolds like a captivating murder mystery behind locked doors, with each scene revealing new layers of intrigue and tension.
What sets this film apart from others in its genre is the unexpected twist at the end – one that left me stunned and eager to rewatch the entire movie to catch any clues I might have missed. It’s no wonder why “Conclave” has been gaining attention as a major Oscar contender this year.
Overall, I would highly recommend “Conclave” to anyone who appreciates well-crafted stories, intricate plot twists, and exceptional acting performances. It is a testament to the power of cinema to transport us to another world and leave us pondering its implications long after the credits roll.
Twisters (Peacock)
“Dune: Part Two” (Max)
According to Peter Debruge from EbMaster’s, Denis Villeneuve’s second “Dune” film was ranked as the fifth best movie of 2024. He praised it by saying that it evokes the same excitement as ‘Star Wars’ in a science fiction context. The human connections within Villeneuve’s grand vision are what make “Dune: Part Two” relatable, as these moments bring the film closer to earth, so to speak. While some Frank Herbert purists may point out what’s missing, the impressive aspect is how effectively the movie streamlines all the complex plot points into understandable story arcs, making the mythology feel almost instinctive, much like experiencing a double sunset did decades ago.
Juror #2 (Max)
Furiosa (Max)
George Miller’s anticipated “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel, titled “Furiosa,” underperformed at the box office and isn’t looking likely to become the Academy heavyweight its predecessor was, but it remains one of the top studio blockbusters of 2023. As EbMaster’s Owen Gleiberman puts it, the film is “strikingly captivating.” Anya Taylor-Joy delivers a powerful performance as Furiosa, a character who was kidnapped as a child and raised by the ruthless warlord Dementus (played by Chris Hemsworth). As she becomes a pawn in an intensifying conflict, Furiosa decides to take action to seek retribution.
Civil War (Max)
In the spring, Alex Garland’s film “Civil War” received praise from critics and grossed $122 million globally. Kirsten Dunst portrays a weary war photographer who travels through a devastated America to secure one of the final interviews with the U.S. president. The film also stars Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman. As described in the review, “Civil War” presents a skillful portrayal of the press as both the good guys and somewhat the villains, offering a gritty, up-close look at what a potential future disintegration of the United States might resemble.
The Substance (Mubi)
It Ends With Us (Netflix)
The movie titled “It Ends With Us,” starring Blake Lively, is based on Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name. In the film, Lively portrays a florist embroiled in an abusive relationship with a good-looking doctor (Justin Baldoni, who also directs the movie). The plot thickens when her old flame, Atlas (Brandon Sklenar), makes a comeback. This romance drama garnered praise for exceeding industry predictions when it hit theaters in August, earning an impressive $350 million globally. Critics like EbMaster praised it as a “compelling soap opera” and an “affecting adaptation” of Hoover’s book.
Deadpool and Wolverine (Disney+)
In 2024, the film starring Deadpool and Wolverine is the second highest-earning movie of the year, raking in a staggering $1.3 billion at worldwide box offices. This film also holds the record as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made. The story revolves around Wade Wilson/Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, who engages in battle against the Time Variance Authority and forms an uneasy alliance with Wolverine, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, to protect their world. This is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe production to feature comic book characters that were once owned by 20th Century Fox, which was bought by The Walt Disney Company in 2019.
Emilia Perez (Netflix)
In the film “Emilia Pérez,” directed by Jacques Audiard, a daring musical drama about a cartel, has garnered the award for best actress at Cannes (with Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz sharing the accolade). This film is Netflix’s strongest contender for the Oscars this season. In the movie, Saldaña portrays a powerful attorney tasked with arranging gender reassignment surgery for a formidable cartel leader. The two characters reconnect later in life to fight cartel violence, but the former leader’s loyalty towards his wife and children creates obstacles for their mission. EbMaster described the musical as “a striking and controversial film” following Cannes, noting: “Emilia Pérez” presents a potent, unvarnished depiction of someone who challenges numerous stereotypes. This is a testament to the leading actress and Audiard’s audacity.
Maria (Netflix)
The Piano Lesson (Netflix)
In the adaptation of August Wilson’s work, “The Piano Lesson,” Malcolm Washington serves as director for Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington in their roles. They previously played these parts on Broadway. The story unfolds around the lives of the Charles family, headed by Doaker Charles (portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson), during the years following the Great Depression in 1936. The piano that is a cherished heirloom for this family has intricate carvings made by an ancestor who was once enslaved. One brother seeks to create wealth by selling the piano and buying back the land where his family labored, while his sister strives to protect it as a symbol of their past. Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Danielle Deadwyler, and Corey Hawkins join them in this production.
Nightbitch (Hulu)
In Marielle Heller’s “Nightbitch,” Amy Adams portrays a mother who grows increasingly frustrated, developing an unusual desire resembling that of a wild canine as she grapples with the urge to break free from her suburban domestic life. The film review states: “Almost six decades have passed since Helen Reddy sang ‘I am woman, hear me roar!’, but this line continues to be an inspiring motto for Adams’ intense portrayal… The symbolism may be slightly muddled, yet the underlying message of the sacrifices mothers are expected to make still carries a strong impact in Marielle Heller’s surreal exploration.” Adams has earned a nomination at the Golden Globes for her powerful performance.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Max)
The long-awaited sequel from Tim Burton titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was a massive success at the box office, earning over $451 million globally. Michael Keaton reprises his role as the unruly ghost, now joined by newcomer Jenna Ortega who plays the troubled daughter of Lydia Deetz, portrayed once again by Winona Ryder. In his review, EbMaster’s Owen Gleiberman noted that the sequel possesses “enough Burton charm” to justify the ticket price. He further commented, “The film offers both good and bad fan service, and despite its occasional awkwardness, I found myself enjoying ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.’
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (Max)
The documentary titled “Super/Man,” directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, chronicles the life story of Christopher Reeve, who rose to fame as Superman (the Man of Steel). After a horse riding accident left him quadriplegic, he spent his later years fighting for a cure for spinal cord injuries. The film includes contributions from Reeve’s family and utilizes personal archives. According to EbMaster, this documentary is an exceptional blend of skillful production and deeply emotional portrayal of the actor’s journey, both up and down.
A Quiet Place: Day One (Paramount+ and Prime Video)
As a die-hard cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the prequel to “A Quiet Place” is now streaming on Paramount+ or Prime Video! Titled “Day One,” this nail-biting tale stars the esteemed Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn. It takes us on a harrowing journey with New Yorkers as they struggle to survive on the very first day of an alien invasion. With Nyong’o’s Oscar-winning talent and the suspenseful atmosphere, this film amassed an impressive $261 million at global box offices over the summer. Don’t miss out on this heart-pounding experience!
Janet Planet (Max)
I Saw the TV Glow (Max)
Jane Schoenbrun’s movie “I Saw the TV Glow” features Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine as two troubled teenagers who share a deep affection for a popular TV show. However, this program and strange occurrences in their actual lives cause them to ponder the authenticity of their reality and self-image. According to the review, “The heart of ‘I Saw the TV Glow’ lies in its character development, with a suspenseful, unspoken connection between two secretive individuals being the film’s most impactful aspect. This bond is electrified by Lundy-Paine’s compelling, unstable portrayal of someone who believes they don’t fit anywhere except within the confines of the television screen.
Fly Me to the Moon (Apple TV+)
The romantic comedy “Fly Me to the Moon,” starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, struggled at the box office this summer, earning just $42 million globally against a production budget of $100 million. However, this film deserves more attention. In this movie, Johansson portrays a marketing specialist employed by NASA prior to the Apollo 11 launch, tasked with filming a fake moon landing as a backup plan if the real mission falters. Tatum plays the launch director who gradually captures her affection. Critic Peter Debruge from EbMaster’s described the movie as a “crowd-pleaser” and a 21st-century romantic comedy that is intelligent and emotionally engaging enough to warrant multiple viewings.
My Old Ass (Prime Video)
Thelma (Hulu)
Oddity (Shudder)
As a lifelong horror movie enthusiast, I must say that “Oddity” was one of the most chilling and unexpectedly humorous films I’ve seen this year. With my extensive background in horror movies, I can attest to the fact that it stands out as a truly unique and effectively frightening experience.
In its review earlier this year, EbMaster called the film an “effectively frightening and unexpectedly droll haunted-house horror,” which I wholeheartedly agree with. The plot follows Dani, who is brutally murdered at the remote country house she and her husband Ted are renovating, with everyone suspecting a patient from the local mental health institution as the culprit. However, soon after the tragic killing, the suspect is found dead.
A year later, Dani’s blind twin sister Darcy, who claims to be a psychic and collector of cursed items, pays an unexpected visit to Ted and his new girlfriend, Yana. Convinced that there was more to her sister’s murder than people know, Darcy brings with her the most dangerous items from her cursed collection to help her exact revenge.
I found myself on the edge of my seat throughout the entire movie, as the plot twists and turns kept me guessing until the very end. The film’s blend of horror, mystery, and dark humor made for a truly captivating viewing experience, and I would highly recommend it to any horror fan looking for something unique and memorable.
Overall, “Oddity” is a must-see horror film that pushes the boundaries of the genre in exciting new ways. It’s clear that the filmmakers put a lot of thought and care into crafting a truly chilling and unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
Late Night With the Devil (Shudder)
“Late Night Terror with the Devil”
Synopsis: On Halloween night, a popular late-night network talk show spirals into otherworldly havoc. David Dastmalchian plays the host, reminiscent of Johnny Carson, who pursues high ratings and crosses a line when he invites an apparently possessed girl onto his show. This film doesn’t aim for the scariest movie title, but it also avoids being purely a self-aware joke. The directors, the Cairnes, manage to strike a clever balance between pop culture satire, familiar (yet not always predictable) suspense elements, and a dreamlike, media-influenced surrealism.
In a Violent Nature (Shudder)
As a lifelong horror enthusiast and a frequent attendee of horror conventions, I must say that “In a Violent Nature” has truly stood out among the plethora of horror films I’ve seen this year. Having grown up on classic slasher movies like “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th,” I can confidently assert that this Canadian indie film brings something fresh and exciting to the table. The innovative approach of telling a terrifying cabin-in-the-woods story entirely from the perspective of the killer is nothing short of groundbreaking. While it may not elicit much outright terror, the movie’s ability to keep viewers on edge and uneasy is commendable. I eagerly await the sequel and look forward to seeing how Chris Nash will continue to push the boundaries of the horror subgenre.
Woman of the Hour (Netflix)
In her first directorial role, Anna Kendrick brings “Woman of the Hour” to Netflix, a movie inspired by real events. In 1978, Kendrick’s character competes on “The Dating Game,” picking Rodney Alcala as her potential date. Unfortunately, Alcala, who passed away in prison in 2021, was revealed to be a notorious serial killer, with confirmed victims numbering at least eight and possibly over a hundred more. Thankfully, the actual contestant, Cheryl Bradshaw, did not go on a date with Alcala, as he had already been convicted of being a sex offender. Daniel Zovatto takes on the chilling role of Alcala, who disguised himself as a photographer in Los Angeles to capture his victims on camera. Besides Kendrick, Tony Hale and Nicolette Robinson are also featured in the film.
Didi (Peacock)
This year at Sundance, Sean Wang’s film titled “Didi” won the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and earned $4.8 million for Focus Features at the summer box office. The movie tells the story of a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy going through an awkward phase in 2008, spending his last month of summer before high school starts. He navigates the pangs of first love, befriends some skaters, clashes with his older sister, and gains a newfound respect for his mom. According to reviews, Wang skillfully combines humor with profound observations about his teenage identity struggles. Despite being part of a crowded genre, ‘Didi’ offers something fresh and makes an impressive debut as a calling card.
Bird (Mubi)
In my perspective as a movie critic, Andrea Arnold’s latest masterpiece, titled “Bird,” is a profound exploration of life, growth, and the complex bond between a young girl and her unpredictable father, portrayed by the talented Barry Keoghan. This film undeniably showcases Arnold’s signature empathy, integrity, and gritty cinematic skill.
The movie features two rising stars in pivotal roles, and Arnold, in her unique style reminiscent of the Dardenne brothers, weaves scenes where the camera follows the protagonist, Bailey, across a wire-mesh bridge, subtly revealing her restless spirit. The film also focuses on Bailey’s cell phone videos, primarily footage of birds that she projects onto her wall.
In essence, “Bird” is a poignant journey of self-discovery and the beauty found in the simplest of things – like watching birds on a wall.
La Chimera (Hulu)
Alice Rohrwacher’s captivating film “La Chimera” stars Josh O’Connor, known for his roles in “Challengers” and “The Crown.” This movie weaves a spellbinding story about a band of Italian grave robbers who must elude the authorities and deal with personal conflicts to successfully execute their most ambitious heist yet. Critic Guy Lodge from EbMaster named “La Chimera” as a Critic’s Pick and described it as “a beautifully flexible and winding film.” He also praised O’Connor’s performance, stating that “O’Connor skillfully balances being raffish and youthful, or switching between the two personas to conceal the other, without resorting to sentimentality.
Will & Harper (Netflix)
The movie “Will & Harper” focuses on the friendship between Will Ferrell and his longtime buddy Harper Steele, who he met during their time at “Saturday Night Live.” Harper was a writer there from 1995 to 2008. In 2022, Harper publicly announced that she is transgender. A critic’s review states: “Get ready for laughter and tears as director Josh Greenbaum follows Ferrell and Steele on an enlightening journey. This road trip movie, featuring genuine moments of humor, emotion, and the occasional prank reminiscent of ‘Borat,’ offers a glimpse into this remarkable woman’s life. Interestingly, it’s also the first time Ferrell is meeting her in real life.
His Three Daughters (Netflix)
“His Three Daughters” by Azazel Jacobs
Synopsis: In this critically acclaimed family drama, Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne portray three estranged sisters who reunite in a New York City apartment to provide care for their ailing father as he battles cancer. Their time together serves not only to nurse him but also to mend their fractured familial bonds and address the turmoil from their past. This film, according to critics, is both humorous and poignant, offering an authentic portrayal of three adult sisters coming together to care for their dying father. The movie evokes comparisons to ‘Cries and Whispers’ but with a contemporary twist on sibling rivalry and fast-paced dialogue.
Hit Man (Netflix)
This year, I truly showcased my cinematic prowess not just in “Twisters”, but also in “Hit Man”. Directed by the legendary Richard Linklater, this crime comedy saw me not only acting, but co-writing as well. Based on a real-life tale, I took on the role of an undercover New Orleans cop who poses as a hitman to nab my clients. However, things take an unexpected turn when I develop feelings for the woman who’s hired me, portrayed by Adria Arjona, and my operation starts to unravel.
The Fall Guy (Peacock)
The action-romance movie “The Fall Guy,” starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, didn’t break any box office records when it premiered in May, earning a worldwide gross of $171.8 million. However, it’s definitely an exciting film to watch on Peacock. In the movie, Gosling plays a stuntman who takes up the task of finding the lead actress missing from a new Hollywood blockbuster, directed by his ex-girlfriend (Blunt). The chemistry between the two actors received high praise, with Peter Debruge from EbMaster’s review stating, “Gosling delivers one of his most captivating characters to date, combining the intense action hero from ‘Drive’ with the charming charisma of ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love.’
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (Hulu)
This summer, the movie titled “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” grossed an impressive $396 million globally. As the fourth installment in the revamped “Apes” series from 20th Century Studios, “Kingdom” focuses on a young character named Noa (Owen Teague), who embarks on a journey to locate his lost family after they are abducted. The cast also includes Kevin Durand, Freya Allen, William H. Macy, and Peter Macon. Critic Owen Gleiberman of EbMaster gave the film a positive review, noting that it successfully captured “the essence of ‘Planet of the Apes'”. He was pleased with the film’s traditional dramatic approach, stating: “I was more than satisfied to immerse myself in its relatively conventional storytelling.
The Bikeriders (Peacock and Prime Video)
Drawing inspiration from Danny Lyon’s 1968 photo book, the film “The Bikeriders,” directed by Jeff Nichols, delves into a Chicago motorcycle gang and the internal conflicts that arise between a new member (Austin Butler) and the group’s leader (Tom Hardy). The ensemble cast includes Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, Boyd Holbrook, Emory Cohen, and Norman Reedus. According to EbMaster’s Peter Debruge, the film was ranked as the third best movie of 2024. In his review, he wrote: “Nichols captures this close-knit society’s gradual self-destruction, much like how the world of gangsters unfolded across ‘The Godfather’ series. If that reference sounds grandiose, consider this: ‘The Bikeriders’ resonates on numerous levels, exploring American masculinity as Jodie Comer’s character, Kathy, becomes captivated by one of these rough-and-tumble men.
Daughters (Netflix)
As a movie enthusiast, I had the privilege of watching “Daughters,” a heart-warming masterpiece directed by Natalie Rae and Angela Patton. This film focuses on a unique dance program that brings incarcerated fathers and their young daughters together. The movie was honored with the Audience Award in the Documentary Competition at Sundance. In the esteemed opinion of EbMaster, this film is brimming with visually poetic scenes that resonate deeply with the sorrows, fears, wisdom, and dreams of these young girls. Under the skillful guidance of directors, cinematographer Michael Cambio Fernandez, and editors Troy Lewis and Adelina Bichis, the documentary beautifully captures a compassionate perspective, leaving ample space for these girls to simply be themselves.
Sasquatch Sunset (Paramount+)
In the quirky comedy “Sasquatch Sunset,” directed by the Zellner Brothers, Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg are metamorphosed into Sasquatch creatures through extensive makeup and abundant hair. The film’s summary goes: “Deep within the mysterious North American woods, a clan of Sasquatches, potentially the last of their elusive species, undertake an absurd, epic, humorous, and ultimately emotional odyssey spanning a year. These shaggy and noble titans battle for existence as they encounter head-on the rapidly transforming world around them.
Love Lies Bleeding (Max)
In “Loves Lies Bleeding,” directed by Rose Glass, Kristen Stewart plays a gym owner in small-town America who becomes smitten with a freshly arrived bodybuilder. Their passionate relationship is disrupted by a murder. Critic Owen Gleiberman, writing for EbMaster, chose this film as a critic’s pick from Sundance, stating that it starts off gritty and intense, but gradually becomes more eccentric… As the story progresses, it accumulates enough extreme violence and bizarre plot twists to be a late-night movie. The film eventually becomes chaotic and flamboyant, and some viewers might think it’s losing direction; however, Rose Glass skillfully manages her creative choices.
Femme (Hulu)
“Femme,” a captivating queer thriller that won three British Independent Film Awards, revolves around the intricate bond between a renowned drag artist in London (portrayed by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) and his attacker, a closeted gay man (George McKay). Their paths cross again at a sauna months later, leading to a relationship fraught with the undercurrent of revenge. The film showcases a remarkable acting duo, as Stewart-Jarrett and McKay deliver electrifying performances, locked in a tense dance as two individuals who share little else but their sexual orientation. This production offers a unique blend of genre excitement and introspective character analysis, making it an engaging study on complex human relationships.
Between the Temples (Netflix)
This year, Nathan Silver’s comedy “Between the Temples” earned Carol Kane the award for best supporting actress from the New York Film Critics Circle. In a glowing review, EbMaster described the film as an “unconventional and delightful comedy.” The critic also noted that the film’s two stars had great chemistry, and that it was a unique take on the classic film “Harold and Maude.” Additionally, the reviewer praised Silver for creating a heartwarming and relatable story about embracing one’s own individuality, regardless of age. While this low-budget indie may not be noticed by those who closely monitor age gaps online, it offers gentle lessons that could resonate with them.
Bonus: A Different Man (Jan. 17 on Max)
Critic Peter Debruge from EbMaster’s ranked “A Different Man” as the sixth top film of 2024. This movie, which received the Gotham Award for best feature, features Sebastian Stan as a struggling actor who gains success following a procedure to correct a facial deformity. However, his life is disrupted by the arrival of a well-known actor dealing with the same condition. Debruge notes that “A Different Man” is one of two thought-provoking sci-fi tales this year, both addressing body image in the film industry. Aaron Schimberg’s gritty dark comedy delivers a ‘be careful what you ask for’ message similar to ‘The Substance,’ but it also explores themes of representation, identity, and casting with great intensity.
